Love for the Arts
I immediately connected with the author of this reading by the third sentence: “I was raised to have no taste in music.” Similar to her situation, I grew up as a child only listening to old-fashion gospel songs and hymns. I didn’t have any encounters with other genres of music until elementary school. Eventually, I received radios and mp3 players as Christmas gifts and then started to find out about rap and R&B. This unfamiliarity with different genres of music could possibly be the reason why I’m presently so narrow-minded when it comes to music.
As Patchett says about opera, you become more enthusiastic once you actually come to comprehend what you’re hearing and seeing. That pretty much goes for anything. Basketball, music, etc. Developing love for a particular thing and enjoying all aspects of it can really determine how much you enjoy it. Opera has always been a difficult thing for me to catch on to so I’m going to have to prepare myself and open my mind so that I’ll be able to enjoy the upcoming performance. I allowed the confusion of the performance at BAM to ruin the entire experience for me. Trying not to have that happen again, especially for our final event together.
