Billy Collins at the Botanical :o
Cold, clammy, wet, and tired is how I felt during my visit to the botanical gardens today. Violetta, Hye Jin and I entered the garden hoping to find beautiful, bright, blooming flowers. Unfortunately all we saw were wet, brown flowers that looked like they were dying. The worst part was the flowers looked like something we could see anywhere. I really wanted to see some exotic and pretty flowers.
As a result we decided to tour to try and find them. We were told that Ross Hall was having many events, so we attempted to head there. First of all none of can really read maps, but that map was easy…I guess. Once we found Ross Hall I came in expecting to see a whole exhibit of flowers, an entire garden of radiant plants. Instead all we saw was the end of The Polar Express. Turns out they were just showcasing a movie. For anyone who wants to go it’s every weekend in December from 2 p.m. on I’m guessing. I left Ross Hall still feeling disappointed because again no flowers. So we went into the next building and finally, some flowers but only a few.
One thing however did really intrigue me. On our way to Ross Hall there were poems by Billy Collins on big white posters all around the garden. That was my favorite part about this trip. As we learned in English Billy Collins is a poet who attended Lehman.
Whenever we saw a Billy Collins poem we stopped in front of it and Violetta read it out loud, then we discussed it and tried to find a meaning to it. Standing in the rain listening to poems by Billy Collins is not how I imagined my Saturday afternoon, but I have to say I really enjoyed that part.
One poem that we read that really stood out to me was called love. I just really loved the ending, because the boy’s actions alone really show how much he loves and respects his girlfriend.
Well it wasn’t the best experience but there were some very nice parts:
Those Christmas trees smelled really good by the way :)
I know it would have been better if it were Spring, or it wasn’t raining. I plan on going back again when the weather is nice, and the flowers are in full bloom.
