Final Project
Reflection:
For this final project, I initially did not know what I wanted to do. I contemplated many ideas, but I didn’t really want to do any of them. I figured out exactly what I wanted to do after I attended Lehman’s winter concert. Lisa, Jackie, Hye Jin, and I attended the Winter Concert together and we thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Towards the end of the show, the orchestra played popular Christmas songs whose lyrics were written in the booklets we were given, so we were able to sing along. We all got so into it and continued singing as we walked back to the dorms. It was then that I knew I wanted to make a Climate Change song to the beat of a popular Christmas song.
Christmas is such a fun holiday that brings so much joy to people. Just thinking about Christmas makes people smile. I thought if I created a song about Climate Change to a catchy beat, people would enjoy it. So I decided to change the lyrics of the well known “12 Days of Christmas,” making it instead “12 Days of Climate Change.” Because of Climate Change, natural disasters will occur on Earth, like typhoons, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc. We don’t like to think that anything bad will happen to us, but it already has. Think about hurricane Katrina or hurricane Sandy; these disasters can and will continue to happen because of the rapidly changing world. Marlene Moses, Nauru’s ambassador to the United Nations, chairwoman of the Alliance of Small Island States said “When I go home and look at the deteriorating situation there — increased droughts, the ocean washing away the coast — I can’t help but be fearful for what the future may hold for Nauru’s children and grandchildren. How will they adapt? Will the international community be there for them? These are most distressing questions to which I don’t yet have answers.” What is going to happen to our future generations here on Earth? What will they do about how destroyed we made the Earth?
Climate Change is real and it’s happening. Look at what is happening around the world; natural disasters are occurring. There is more CO2 in the atmosphere, sea levels are rising, ice caps are melting, things are changing and not for the better. Gloria Steinem, co-founder and former editor of Ms. Magazine said, “Thinking about climate change used to give me images of the sun burning down and icebergs melting — horrific, but also impersonal and far away. Now I have intimate fears of storms and floods that drive us off this island of Manhattan, and fires that send thousands fleeing — in other words, just an acceleration of what we’re already seeing.” Climate Change will affect each individual personally. Chaos will ensue everywhere, not just in one particular area. Global warming will affect us all and we won’t like it. Steps need to be taken to make sure that we as a society in all the countries all over the world work together to get this problem of Climate Change eradicated for good. Obviously some problems are irreversible now, but we might as well be hopeful for a brighter future for all of us.
