Make-Up Trips
- iTones Concert at Queens College: I only enjoyed a few of the groups from this performance because a lot of them seemed a bit pitchy. However I did enjoy the songs and the mix between contemporary and underground music. The space was also not very good for a capella because even though it was an amazingly large hall, the acoustics didn’t carry through enough to create strong resonance. I know when I performed; it was very difficult to hear the rest of my group. So I can only imagine what it must’ve been like the audience members.
- Macaulay Triplets Concert: My favorite performance of the night from the other groups that came to our home concert was the Justin Timberlake medley. What I really liked about this arrangement was the smooth transitions between the snogs because cutting from song to song can easily be messy and choppy. They also did a great job at picking up the small details of the song. Other arrangements however, lacked intricacy and precision. Some of them just seemed great because they sang with volume and energy.
- Smith College Performance: I enjoyed the sassiness and playfulness of the Smith College Notables. I was also impressed with how they learn without sheet music. Learning any song can be difficult enough, but to accomplish a whole a capella song with no sheet music is even more difficult. What I did notice, however, is that they tended to use the same phrase throughout all their songs, just in different ways and in different keys. There could’ve been more variety in the sounds and vowels they chose to make. But overall, I thought they were a really amazing group to watch and I’m glad they welcomed the Macaulay Triplets with warm welcomes.
