The Cherry On Top

I had been looking forward to seeing Hansel and Gretel at the Met since the beginning of the semester. Even though I had never been to an opera before and had no idea how the performance would go, I knew that it would be a memorable experience. Surprisingly, my predictions about my experiences at the Met were spot on. First off, the theater was GORGEOUS.   There were times when I found myself getting distracted by the beauty of the decorations.

Overall, I really enjoyed the performance. I liked how the images of the empty plate and the mouth (it was a mouth right?) were used to show the progression of the plot. My favorite part of the performance was when the witch appeared in Act III. Was I the only one that was surprised that a man was playing a witch? As surprised as I was, I particularly enjoyed the performer’s portrayal of the witch. He had the perfect balance of being humorous and threatening. Without a doubt, this was the perfect way to end this semester and I hope that someday I may be able to go back to the Met.
