Hansel & Gretel

It was great to see an opera I have known about since I was in elementary school. When we participated in Music Memories contests, the Hansel & Gretel song that goes “Tralalalala..” was in it and I became nostalgic as I hummed with the tune. I believe this was my first live opera. It was very relaxing to see entire songs about a fairy tale in the middle of finals week. It was great to just sit and relax with the entire class.

My favorite part was when Hansel and Gretel were dreaming. It was hilarious and unexpected, and I couldn’t understand the Sandyman until Peter explained it to me. Otherwise it resembled hallucinogenic drugs. I don’t blame the kids, though. Who doesn’t love gourmet meals? The other thing that stood out to me was the witch herself. When she started singing I was confused because her voice was big and booming. She sounded like a man. It was great though. I loved the humorous parts like the smiley face on the oven, and I loved the way all the lyrics were poetic and beautiful. It was a great way to end the semester.
