Noguchi Museum is an Epic one to visit!
As far as art goes, I favor colorful, intricate and modernist stuff. Japanese sculptural minimalism is not on my shortlist of interests but since my little sister was doing a project on the American-Japanese sculptor Isamu Noguchi, so I decided to use my Macaulay cultural passport to get the ticket for Noguchi Museum for a discounted price.
I did not know what to expect from Noguchi museum. His legacy, people he worked with and the recognition of his work are well known, of course. But the museum in Astoria is something else. It is very different from any museum in nyc, and in a sense, it reflects Noguchi’s style and personality. There are 3 distinct spaces there – semi-open industrial space for large stone pieces; indoor exhibit for fine stone and drawings; and a little garden. I saw some amazing sculptures in the open areas evergreens spreading their brunches over quiet garden, and bamboo. His sculptures carry simplicity of Japanese art with the infusion of surrealism movement. His drawing exhibition is impressive. The lines, brushstrokes, the movement, feeling of the person pictured and the artist’s soul – all put on paper… Simply beautiful. The fountain basin, set in separate room, has a bench in front of it and one can simply enjoy a quiet moment with just the murmur of water .
