I was quite surprised

“Ohhh My Gawd,” I actually watched an opera! I would have never predicted in a million years that I would actually attend one, especially in the famous Metropolitan opera. But the most surprising part is that I really enjoyed it. The scenery is so beautiful; Hansel’s and Gretel’s kitchen had such simple furniture painted with different shades of white. The style of the props reminded me of the paintings of Vincent van Gogh.
The acting and the plot was hilarious. I originally thought operas were incredibly sophisticated, somewhat pretentious, with its elaborate visuals and eloquent monologues. Surprisingly, operas can be very down-to-earth with simple scripts. One line in particular was, “I want to hug and cuddle you!” which made me laugh so much. Then the sandman appeared, randomly to put Hansel and Gretel to sleep, before midget chefs arrived bringing a feast of food I couldn’t see. The ending was the best part. The witch was actually charming and entertaining man! Sadly and shockingly, she (or he?) was eaten up by cannibalistic children trapped as clay statues. I will never again underestimate the powers of the opera.
