We should Initiate the Change
As mentioned by Professor Perl, Squarzoni does get repetitive in his book “Climate Changed” as he talks about the “time running out” and temperature change quite a few times but the only thing that still keeps this book interesting to me is the creative drawings and photos in the panels which conveys Squarzoni’s message much strongly than his words.
One such photo is this one found in the top panel of page 167.
This photo captured my attention because it shows the vulnerable situation of the people who are striving just to get a bucket of water from the well to full-fill their basic necessities. From their appearance, it looks like they have not showered for a long time and the shortage of water seems to be one of the major concerns of their everyday life. Looking at this picture makes me grateful for the small things I have but at the same time, I feel frightened for the future of humans on Earth. What if this happens to everyone in the future? What if we won’t be able to survive because of the shortage of water? This picture makes me conscious of my own ruthless bbehaviorsuch as leaving the water run while shampooing my hair or brushing my teeth. This reminds me of the water quota in Noria’s world in the “Memory of Water” as the people in this picture have to survive with limited water supply just like the people in Itaranta’s book had to with the water quotas. Moreover, this photo also reminds me of “Adaptation Apartheid” mentioned in video 360 we watched earlier in the semester because in this picture the women are wearing the indian traditional dress “sari” which means this photo has been taken in some part of India and the fact that the people of third world countries are indirectly being affected by our bbehaviorseems morally wrong. Therefore, we should be the ones to initiate a change in behavior so that we could put a stop to the gradual destruction of Mother Earth.
