I’ve feel like I’ve been deceived….
After reading the last part of this section, I felt like I have been deceived. All this time, I have envisioned the Earth as that same one image on page 170 taken in 1972! However, I can’t believe it never occurred to me that this image of the Earth was taken nearly 50 years ago. 50 years! That’s half a century! I could hardly imagine what our Earth looks like now. I strongly agree with Squarzoni’s wife when she says that we, as human beings, tend to “choose an image that fits the idea we started with”. The idea we started with, in this case, for me, would be the perfectly round shape of the Earth. I’ve seen the image on page 170 probably everyday in my Earth Science class or my science textbook. I would think to myself how beautiful our planet is. How flawless. Clearly, I had no idea what climate change or global warming was back then. I think I was just awestruck by the brilliant blue, green, and white hues. However, if there were to be another Apollo mission, would the Earth still look the same? Could we even see the Earth as clearly as we could in 1972? I imagine that all the excess CO2 emissions that are building up in the stratosphere would fog up the image of the Earth.
