The Comfort of Memories
First off, Squarzoni’s girlfriend has a name: Hi Camille!
On p.235 deals with memories and their importance. I love that Squarzoni says: “ I thought to myself this moment would soon pass. Yet endure. Later we would open that door when we needed comfort. We could enter and spend an eternity there.” This quote was absolutely beautiful to me.
What Squarzoni says is so true. Whenever we capture moments as simple as they maybe, whenever we are distressed we can always transport ourselves back to this time and place however don’t our memories change? Don’t the memories of those memories become tainted? After all our recollection of that moment will never be what truly happened. In fact, it is our interpretation of those events occurring before our eyes. It is up to us to decide what is important enough to consider and take in. After all, our reconstructions of our memories are constantly changing.
I feel as though Sqaurzoni revisits his memories throughout the whole book.
At the beginning of the book, he is talking about his childhood. He continues revisiting those memories, perhaps because he needs comfort. Some part of him wants to return to the simpler times, when he was new to the world and had no cares or worries. When he didn’t have to face the facts of climate change.
