We are innocent and heartless…
That line really hit me. It’s such a contradictory statement and yet its true. We are innocent in that we are naive. We believe that things will get better even though people are saying it won’t. And we are heartless because despite all the information we have, we continue to deplete our resources and destroy our environment for the temporary pleasures that it provides. We know, but we don’t know. Or we know, and we don’t want to know, so we pretend that we don’t know at all. And hopefully our ignorance of the problem will save us. But ultimately, this isn’t up to us. I mean it is and it isn’t. The world is already doomed. I hate to say it, but it’s true. We have already caused enough damage to create a significant change in our planet.
However, it is up to us whether we choose to continue down this path of destruction or to “repent.” I used the word ignorance because Squarzoni mentions how we continue to promote the idea that climate change isn’t happening here. To us. Even though we are surrounded by it. He cleverly depicts people surrounded by water, being consumed by ‘consumerism.” The tv watching, waiting for the ads to come on so we can see what to buy next. We have been completely absorbed by our selfish pleasures, we have become blind to the most obvious of changes. Like the water that has begun to drown us…
