If only it had a better ending…

In the last few pages of the graphic novel Climate Changed, Squarzoni talks about various ways of ending this book. He tells the readers that he is unable to end this book on a positive note because of the things he believes on. He uses the analogy of a closing doorway for the current situation of climate change and mentions that although the damage can be reduced and the worst consequences can be avoided, he is not very hopeful that we, humans will choose the pathway of reducing the damage because that would mean lowering our consumption and carbon footprint which is not what a lot of us are willing to do.
Like a lot of people, I didn’t like the ending of this book because he ends this book without any conclusion, hope or answer but he just includes a few drawings of himself and his wife working on a computer which (to me) is an ambiguous ending and it makes me think that maybe a second sequel will come out but then there would be nothing to write about in the sequel because as mentioned by Squarzoni, nobody knows the end yet and climate change is still going on.

Except for the ending, Climate Changed is an impressive book as the author has really put a lot of research and effort into this book. Philippe Squarzoni presents the story of climate change mirrored with reflections of his childhood and glimpses into his personal life during his time researching and working on the book. That was really interesting to see how his research led him to write a cli-fi book like this. I also appreciated how he lets us readers know that the big ideas /solutions being pushed forward by the scientists/experts don’t necessarily translate immediately into doable actions in our lives. Like, he realizes that he can’t reasonably expect to never travel again. He just decides to cut down on how much plane travel he does.

The most amazing feature of this book is it’s artwork otherwise without them, this book would be boring as it has a lot of facts and information. There are landscapes and portraits. All the drawings are clean and understandable due to which i didn’t have to concentrate on the heavy information and it kept me interested in this book.
Overall, this book is a great addition to the short list of cli-if books and is worth reading especially for people like me who has just begun to look into the idea of climate change.
