One Planet One Chance Commentary
.09 of One Planet, Once Change. A man with a gas mask and astronaut-like suit stands in a landfill. Garbage surrounds him. Broken refrigerators. Plastic bags. In the background similar men fiddle with garbage. What are they doing with it? Who are they? The sky is grey. Filled with birds. As if it was taken from Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller “Birds.” The world is black and white as if someone sucked all of the color away with a straw. Frightening. Apocalyptic.
This reflects not only the state of the world today but of doomsday. Landfills are packed with our garbage, poison to the earth. The apocalyptic aura of this photograph hints upon the end of the world. Men in protective suits and gas masks mirror the inability of breathing in the atmosphere once the carbon dioxide ppm in the atmosphere exceeds 360. The birds represent vultures, symbolizing the decaying of our planet and what will happen when it is no more. The lack of color hints upon the lack of life in the end of days. This photograph is effective because it is not only a commentary on our world today but of the world that may come because of our irresponsible actions. We cannot lead our world to utter demolition. We must repair the damage we caused our world.
