What can outlive human kinds genius? PLASTIC!
In the beginning it was obvious to me why the book is called memory of water but actually reading the book gives one a whole new sense of the title. I was thinking that in the book water was no longer a naturally occurring substance and thus it must have been man made, I was thinking that the characters in the book would have the means to artificially create everything that was destroyed by human kind. I was thinking the book would give a somewhat futuristic view on the planet. I realize now that in order for human kind to adapt so well to such a drastic change, a result of global warming, I guess there must be a transition period, a period in which human kind is beginning to adapt and a period not as advanced as the one I was imagining, the period in which this book actually takes place.
My assumptions on the book where in many ways wrong, but I think what Itäranta did was genius she is giving a view of the world through Noria, a young individual who has no ties to the people who lived before her the people who left the world in such a debilitated state, she therefore has an unbiased opinion and only sees what was left for her to judge of us. Noria is just at the age of maturity where she begins to see the reality of all things, this is great because as she begins to learn and discover more things so do we the readers and being approximately her age it allows us to empathize with her and makes us wonder what would we do if we were in her position? What I found interesting is that among all these new revelations on the state of the world they talk about plastic, “Junk plastic , on the other hand , never seemed to run out, because past-world plastic took centuries to degrade…”. Yes it is disappointing to see that in the book all we left behind for our future generations were pieces of plastic. It makes us realize that though we may think we are leaving behind great legacies, according to this book and this point of view our children’s children will not see our great skyscrapers our grand genius all we would have left behind for our future generations is our filth, our plastic. I guess Polyethylene Terephthalate will out live us more than we know.
