Essay Prize for Juniors and Seniors

Are you passionate about a political issue or social cause?  Has a volunteer opportunity or recent travel made you think about the broader world and your position in it?  Are your future plans motivated by your ethical concerns?  If these questions spark your interest and you are a junior or senior, please strongly consider entering the 2015 Prize in Ethics Essay Contest, sponsored by the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity.  The foundation offers generous prizes for winning essays and the deadline is December 8, 2014.

2015 Essay Topic: Articulate with clarity an ethical issue that you have encountered and analyze what it has taught you about ethics and yourself.

Information Session on Fellowship for New Americans

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans recognizes the contributions of immigrants or children of immigrants by awarding college seniors or students who are at the beginning of their graduate studies up to $90,000 to pursue an advanced degree at a U.S. institution.  Not only does this fellowship provide generous funding, but it also is not restricted to particular degrees, fields or institutions.  Don’t miss your chance to explore this amazing opportunity!

The 2015 competition is now open, with the application due November 1st.  Selection criteria emphasize creativity, originality and initiative, but financial need is not a factor.  You can read the full eligibility requirements and access the application, instructions and other very useful resources here.  If you are thinking about applying, please come to an information session on the Soros fellowship sponsored by the Office of Honors and Scholarships.

Scholarship for Study Abroad

The Benjamin A. Gilman scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for students with financial need to study or intern abroad, and the online application for spring 2015 is now open.

Student application deadline: October 7, 2014 by 11:59pm (central)  Your application must be certified by Study Abroad and Financial Aid by October 14th.  All applicants will be notified of their status in December.

Generous Funding for Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics Graduate School

Are you planning to go to graduate school in one of the hard or social sciences in 2015?  Are you concerned about how you’ll pay for it?  The following fellowship might be for you!

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) provides very generous funding for research-based masters and doctoral programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.  Fields in the social sciences, such as psychology, are also included.  The program supports outstanding students early in their careers and encourages members of under-represented groups to apply.  Application deadlines vary from October 29, 2014 to November 4th, 2014 (depending on your field).  You don’t need to have a graduate school acceptance letter by the time you submit the fellowship application, but the award is contingent on graduate school admission.  The fellowship’s website (linked above) provides detailed information on the program requirements, application process and selection criteria.  As you know, the beginning of the new semester will be a busy time, and you’ll want to give your graduate school and fellowship applications your best effort, so why not spend some time now investigating this incredible opportunity?  As with other fellowships, please feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Scholarship for Asian Students

The online Asian & Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) application is now open, and this year, Queens College is a partner institution.  This means that eligible students may apply for scholarships of up to $5,000.  The foundation also offers scholarship winners opportunities for academic advising, career guidance, and the chance to connect with current students and former scholarship winners from other campuses.

To be eligible you must:

  • Be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity as defined by The U.S. Census.
  • Be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S. or a citizen of the U.S. Freely Associated States.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree program at Queens College during the 2015 Spring Semester.
  • Have applied for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), although you do not necessarily have to be receiving federal aid.

The application  deadline is October 15th, 2014.  And please feel free to contact me to discuss your application including the essays.

Global Awareness Helps With Fellowship Applications

If you’re following the World Cup, you might be able to use your global interest to compete for a national fellowship!  Many, like Fulbright, Truman and Watson, expect successful candidates to be well-rounded people who are engaged in their communities and connected to their broader world.  One way to demonstrate your global citizenship is to follow national and international news.  If you, someone in your family, or your favorite football team is from another country, or if there’s a country you’re dying to visit, why not spend some time this summer reading a national, or even local newspaper from there? You can often read all or parts of newspapers and magazines for free on the internet.  As Queens College students, you can apply for a free online subscription to the New York Times through their Academic Pass program.  The Skim is a daily email newsletter which gives you short, often humorous summaries of important national and international news stories with links to more in-depth information.  Common Dreams also offers a daily email update with an emphasis on commentary from a politically progressive perspective.

Today in History and Related Fellowship

Here in the United States, June 19th marks an important milestone in our history and commemorates efforts to increase equality.  Juneteenth, as the holiday is known, celebrates the June 19th, 1865 statement by General Gordon Granger that the Emancipation Proclamation would be enforced by the troops then occupying Texas.  In these days of instant news and online activism, it is hard to believe that it could take over two years for slavery to be completely abolished.  If you are interested in using today’s media to address crucial global issues, check out the Fulbright National Digital Storytelling Fellowship.  For this or other national fellowships, please feel free to contact me for assistance.

Scholarship Opportunity for Asian Women

The Asian Women In Business Scholarship encourages and promotes exceptional Asian female students who have demonstrated scholarship, leadership, community service and/ or entrepreneurship.  The deadline for completed applications is October 1, 2014. 

Candidates for the scholarship must be female of Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry.  This includes those who can trace their ancestry from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.   Candidates must also fulfill the following criteria:

  • Have a demonstrated leadership role in a community endeavor and/or a record of entrepreneurial achievement
  • Be enrolled full-time in an accredited four-year undergraduate institution in the U.S. at the time of application and award and have completed at least one semester of undergraduate study.
  • Carry a minimum GPA of 3.0 on their college transcript.
  • Provide the most recent college transcript.
  •  Provide a minimum of one professional recommendation
  • Fully complete and sign the AWIB Scholarship Application

Scholarship winners will receive $2,500, and may be considered for an additional need-based award of $2,500 if they submit a copy of their current FAFSA form and their 2014-2015 Financial Aid Award Letter.
