Creative Project: The Nose — 11 Comments

  1. I really liked your modern take on the theme of social status in Gogol’s The Nose. I could tell that Ken had gotten accepted into a prestigious college and that after being accepted he acted like he was much better than the friends he used to hang out with. This was similar to how the nose looked down on his former “owner” after he became a high-ranking government official.
In addition I really liked the music that you all chose. It suited the mood of each scene perfectly, from the happy-go-lucky song you guys chose in the beginning to the somber music that played in the black-and-white scenes.

  2. I enjoyed your project. I like the way you express feeling by using color and black and white affects. In the beginning, its all happy, everyone is friendly and enjoying each others company. You seem like two friends that are pretty much inseparable. I get the feeling that you guys do everything together, go everywhere together, and can never be found apart.
Everything seems great until Ken lets that letter gets to his head. I like how this compared to the nose feeling empowered over his owner. Ken felt he was better that all of you and basically used you guys as slaves. I like the way it ended because Ken got what he deserved. No one should be able to feel like they are better then someone else for material reasons.

  3. I really enjoyed your video. The editing and different effects were really good. I especially liked the way that you intentionally left the video as sideways to illustrate that the way that Ken was treating Jake and Nick was wrong. I also like the different background music that you chose for you video. I think that each one fit perfectly with the scene they went with. In terms of the message of the video, I though that was very clear and very relevant to the theme of social status that is found in Gogol’s, The Nose. Overall, great video.

  4. Terrific job of setting the scene. It is clear from the beginning what state the characters are in – from happy to beaten to liberated. The effects and black and white shots of the video enhanced the perception you were giving the audience. The music was especially haunting, it reminded me of the introduction song to Homeland. In terms of how your video related to The Nose, I enjoyed how it was clear that social status, power, and identity were all themes in the video. Your ending was certainly just, yet very different from The Nose, so that was a nice surprise.

  5. I liked that there was a gloomy mood to your video but at the same time there was humor incorporated into it as well. I really enjoyed watching it and thought it was definitely well done. The concept you guys were going for seemed clear and in addition I thought the timing of the whole thing was thought out well. I also loved the effects, it definitely enhanced your point, adding to Jake and Nick’s frustration. And the music helped set the tone as well, so overall good job!

  6. I think the concept of your video was very clear and simple. It was set up perfectly with the friendly interactions in the beginning, and the turning point was especially dramatized through the congratulations effects. The change in interaction was very noticable, and therefore easy to understand. I think your video effects and music choice added very nicely to your concept and message. Your ending was also very humorous.

  7. Nice video! I see the parallel between themes in your video and themes in The Nose. There seems to be an emphasis on some sort of social order here, just as there was in The Nose. I liked your special effects and before/after type of narration. The color vs. black white assists in this comparison. Also, the change from landscape to portrait assists as well. It is very obvious that something has changed after Ken has received that letter. It goes from color and landscape where Ken and Jake are good friends, to distorted, black and white, and sideways where pride has gone to Ken’s head. It clearly explains your story and ideas.

  8. I thought you guys were creative in saying that the change in Kens behavior didn’t come from the fact that his body change but rather, an outside force changed the way he viewed his surroundings. I also liked how Ken was then beat up as if to show that the others had enough of his treatment. I thought it was great that you were able to get all these points across without using much dialogue and rather, your actions did all the talking.

  9. The music in the first scene of the video fit perfectly with the emotions of the two characters. They cheerfully walked down the hallway as the lyrics playing were “We’re feeling good.” I liked the special affects in the middle of the video because it indicated a transitioning of scenes. The change in mood was portrayed well with the melancholy music and black and white screen. I liked how the boy, who received the job, wiped his shoes on the other characters and moved them around to show superiority. The only thing that could have been done better is the clarity of the video because I think blurring a scene made it hard to distinguish emotions.

  10. I really liked the music you chose – I think it worked well with the emotions you were conveying. In addition, I think the black and white versus the colored scenes really worked effectively. You guys did a good job of portraying how social status can change a person, just like The Nose. Nick and Jake really acted out their parts well; I especially liked when Nick was on the floor and Ken wiped his shoes on him. I think that really depicted the difference in class. Well done!

  11. I think it was a cute show that really showed just how quickly the people around us and even ourselves can change by the onset of a higher social status. With an ever growing distinction between poor and rich it looks like were rescinding back to medieval times where the same boundaries were also true. I think your video shows the medieval aspect in todays times because we can see so clearly change and become a different person while believing he’s better than he best friend, Jake. I think the end really embodies what we should be doing and that is kicking out the rich and getting a coalition going on between the lower class. We would win and we have the masses behind us, yet I think a big part of society has yet to feel that empowered. So, America, when?
