A Little Intro About Me

Hey everybody! My name is Julian Tsang and I hail from Queens, New York.

Despite having lived in the city all my life, I am a country boy at heart. I love listening to country music. The music of Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, and Luke Bryan (and many others) fill my ears every morning in the subway on the way to class. But lately, I’ve also been getting into the funky pop sounds of Maroon 5 and Usher. In my spare time, I love to fiddle with my guitar. I usually play for at least two hours at a time because I tend to get lost in trying to learn new songs.

Every week, I practice Wing Chun martial arts. But please don’t be intimidated by me because I regularly get beat up by my peers in kungfu class, some of whom are smaller than me. There was an instance when a student half my size kept on hitting me and cornering me to the wall. (It was quite embarrassing since the whole class stopped just to watch me get pummeled). I think that’s a testament to how effective and easy-to-use Wing Chun is. Any person of any size can learn it. Because of this, every week, I train with a multifaceted group of students, each with his/her unique personal qualities. This kind of ethnic diversity reminds me of a certain college I attend…

Some of my other hobbies include:
–       watching television comedies (The Office, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, etc.)
–       serving my allegiance to the New York Giants and New York Jets
–       swimming
–       playing basketball
–       playing pool

I have to work on my breaking…

And last, but not least, I have a soft spot for dark chocolate…and Taylor Swift.

One of my friends made this for me…and I think it’s quite fitting to be honest.

I look forward to meeting with you all this year! You can probably find me fooling around at Baruch’s pool table on the third floor.

Introduction

Hi everyone!

My name is Evans Charles Augustin, but my friends just call me Evans. I was born in Brooklyn, New York but by my first birthday my parents moved us out to Malverne which is on Long Island. I love playing soccer, I have been playing since I was seven years old. Since then it has become a big part of my life, I love playing pick up games with friends and my little brother. I have played for a few different teams including my high school for all four years. Soccer has helped me meet new people, travel to interesting places around the country, and get out of my shell. Sometimes when I’m playing I feel like a completely different person.

IMG_0567IMG_0269  I also have an interest in drawing,  lately I have been practicing drawing anime. I never knew there were so many techniques and styles you could work with.

I don’t really like talking about myself, but I am really looking forward to meeting all of you and learning about your interests.

Read about Diana!

Hey guys my name is Diana Perlov and I’m from Brooklyn. I’ve lived in Brooklyn my whole life, but I was born in Ukraine. When I was just 11 months old my dad won the Green Card Lottery and that’s how my parents and I ended up in America so it was basically pure luck. One of my first experiences in Brooklyn was attending a local dance studio when I was 3 years old and since then I haven’t stopped dancing. I’ve trained in all types of dance, but I’ve focused on ballet and modern.  I’ve also had the opportunity to perform all over the city and some of the highlights have been performing at Madison Square Garden at a New York Liberty game and performing at my graduation at the David Koch theater in Lincoln Center. So it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that I went to LaGuardia Performing Arts School the last 4 years and majored in dance. At Baruch, I hope to integrate my creative background into the business world. I plan on becoming a marketing major with a minor in corporate communications, because I want to work in the public relations field although that may always change. But my dream job would be working for a celebrity, such as Beyoncé or Madonna (whom I’ve actually met), but we’ll see what happens!

I’m very into astrology and my zodiac sign is Cancer, which I find very fitting. I’m also an only child and have a 2 year old dog named Liza. She is half beagle half Jack Russell, and is potentially the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, but you can judge for yourself.

Lastly, I wanted to mention that I love travelling. I’ve travelled domestically to California and Florida to name a few and internationally to Cancun, London, Paris, Canada, and Ukraine. This list will definitely expand over the next few years and I hope to study abroad in Australia.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I definitely look forward to getting to know everyone!

Hi I’m Ken, and Excited to Meet You All

My name is Kenneth but you can call me any form of Kenneth, Ken, Kenny, and if you really want to be more creative I’m open to ideas. I am from a town on Long Island known as Farmingdale. I personally love traveling and meeting new and exciting people. My hobbies are long ranging but my favorites would probably have to be Rock Climbing, Hiking and Frisbee.

Frisbee is really fun and can be exciting to watch also! Look at this clip and try to tell me this isn’t intense

I plan on majoring in Accounting and want to double major with economics on the side but have been told on multiple occasions its close to impossible. I am still going to try though. I want to major in accounting because I love money and have a knack for numbers. I think it really is beautiful the way a company can be broken up in numbers and simplified so that it is measurable. I also want to own my own business, (probably a financial consulting firm or something not sure yet) and accounting is a great way to learn the inner workings of a business.

I also love talking about the economy and stock market so if you are ever interested in having a discussion about either, don’t hesitate to start talking to me about it, I can go on for days about the stock market!

I look forward to getting to know all of you better!

Kevin Parakkattu – Introduction

Hey everyone! My name is Kevin Parakkattu and I am from Rockland County, NY or “upstate” as urban dwellers often refer to the area as. I decided to come to the city because this area always fascinated me with its large buildings and chance for opportunity. I enjoy playing sports, especially tennis and basketball. However, my true hobby is working on and researching automobiles. I am specifically interested in imported vehicles such as Nissans and Hondas. Amongst my favorite cars is the Alpha 12 AMS GTR, a heavily modified version of Nissan’s powerhouse vehicle, the GTR. Here is a video.  Cars are my passion and I hope to learn more about them as life goes on.

A Snippet of Me

Hey, everyone! My name is Emily Yeung (pronounced as young; trust me, I’ve had my fair share of mispronunciations) and I am 18 years old. I was born in Manhattan but have spent most of my life in Queens.

Before coming to Baruch, I went to Brooklyn Tech.  I was on the girl’s bowling team for three years. You might think that bowling isn’t a sport but it really is. It takes time and practice to make sure that your ball hits that sweet spot for a strike.

While I’m still on the topic of sports, does anyone watch basketball? Though I can’t play well, I adore it.  I was at Madison Square Garden last season and watched Houston play against the Knicks. We lost terribly. However, it was beyond amazing cheering with everyone else whenever the Knicks made a bucket.  My friend also caught me a Knicks Now tee during the t-shirt shooting!

I love kids. I’ve worked at two different summer camps and have enjoyed each experience greatly. Getting to know them can pose to be quite challenging at times but going separate ways in the end is always bittersweet. I miss all of my kids dearly but I know they’re going to make me proud in whatever they aspire to accomplish.

So that’s my tip of the iceberg. Thanks for reading and I can’t wait to meet you all in our Macaulay community!

Good morning/afternoon/evening to everyone!

Hello to all the readers of this blog!

My name is Janice Fong and I am part of the High C’s.  I am 17, but I am really looking forward to being 18 and actually signing all permission slips by myself (haha).  A little bit about myself is that I am from Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn.  I went to Brooklyn Technical High School and yes, we did have our graduation in the Barclay’s Center which was very cool.  I ran all three seasons of XC/Track and Field for three years.

I am hoping to major in Finance and possibly minor in something in politics.  Currently, I intern part time at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. as a part of the Fixed Income Securities Lending desk.  It’s an amazing experience as well as a lot of fun!

I love going to the beach.  Santa Monica, California is indeed my favorite place in the world.  It’s better than Coney Island in my opinion!

Santa Monica, California (photo from the internet, but still a breathtaking view!)

I also have a little pet guinea pig, which for some reason amazes people even though they are super popular little critters!  She is very special though, she has a crest on her head which makes her even more adorable.  However, she’s pretty heavy but that’s probably because she loves to eat corn.

This is my guinea pig lying in my sheets.  She really loves soft blankets to sleep in!

As for music, I really enjoy electropop.  To be completely honest, I really like anything but it depends on my mood.  Sometimes I prefer soft music, other times loud music is what I’m looking for.

Well that’s enough about me.  I can’t wait to read your blogs! 🙂

Hi Everyone!

Hi Everyone!

My name is Lisa and I’m very excited to start this new semester and get to know a lot of new people. I hope I seem approachable and nice, but I’m sorry if you can’t seem to catch my eyes in the halls; I have horrible tunnel vision when I’m walking and I will probably see you at the last minute and feel bad because I kinda just ignored you.

I’m from Queens, born and raised. I did live in Shanghai, China for four years when I was little but I hardly have any memories of that time of my life. Much of the influence from those years carries with me in my ability to speak and understand both Shanghai-nese and Mandarin. That comes in pretty handy when I’m forced to Skype with the half of my extended family who still live there and help strangers with directions on the 7 train.

My first love was reading. I grew up a block away from a branch of the Queens library, so I spent a lot of fond hours there (I also lost my library card a ton of times and have a sneaking suspicion that my mom still doesn’t trust me because of it). If you ask me my favorite book, I probably won’t be able to respond; my brain will overheat and crash. But, in general, it’s any book that makes me redetermine my perspective on a subject or is amazing enough to make me shed a few tears. I’m more likely to have an answer if you ask my opinion on a book I’ve read or am currently reading. I also love rollerblading, badminton, handball, and tennis even though I’m only slightly good at all of them. If you’re serious about playing any of those sports, you’d probably be irritated at me because I just like hitting the birdies around for fun.

I didn’t listen to music too much until I was almost in middle school. Avril Lavigne’s Girlfriend was the first song I was hooked on so I still have a soft spot in my heart for it. Since then I’ve found alternative pop (ex. Paramore’s That’s What You Get) to my liking. I think that I’m incredibly mainstream with the music that I currently like but my favorite song is Kate Nash’s cover of the Arctic Monkey’s Fluorescent Adolescent. Mostly, I’ll listen to anything that you can jump around to and not cry about. That means that you won’t find Adele on my iPod.

The past few years I’ve found a love for running and volunteering. My goal for these next years are to run some 5ks during my spare time for causes that are close to my heart. I’m also excited to try new things like hiking, biking or what have you. I’m also hoping to make the next few years really memorable with a lot of great new friends! Thanks for reading this small essay of my life and I can promise that I’m even more vibrant and talented and stunning in real life, duh.

About A Girl

I started writing this blog post in a super-formal tone, and then I felt really uncomfortable writing like that while blogging. Hi, I’m Joanne (my close friends call me Joanie) and I’m 17. College has made me pretty much forget that I’m not a legal adult just yet mostly because there’s more freedom than I’m used to. In other words, it’s been great.

To start off, Marianas Trench is my favorite band and their harmonies are amazing, but I do like/love other bands! If you ask to see my music app on my phone, I’ll oblige you. Speaking of Marianas Trench, they were the first band I ever saw live, and it’s an experience I’ll never forget.

Marianas Trench Concert

The whole reason I am likely enraptured by harmonies is because I was in what my middle school called “vocal talent” for three years before deciding I wanted to try my hand at law in high school. After four years of learning about the law (and three years of speaking roles on the mock trial team), I was positive that I want to become an attorney.

I’m majoring in English (to build a strong critical reading foundation so I can ace the LSAT), but before the cries of “But why are you at Baruch if you’re majoring in English?” begin to ring through these hallowed (virtual) halls, I am also intending to minor in business law.

Art likes to frequently astound me. I could probably spend hours looking at the lines, curves, and shapes if I wouldn’t tire so quickly. My mom and I went to Paris and Versailles, and the palace is more of an art museum/museum of history at this point; there are plenty of portraits of the Louis kings, their queens, and their mistresses.

My favorite painter is Artemisia Gentileschi. She is an inspiration to the feminist movement and an excellent painter. The examination of her interpretation of Judith beheading Holofernes is interesting in that she chose to depict that scene from the Bible. I like it because she took her power into her own hands like Judith, and participated in her rapist’s prosecution–the painting was pretty much a metaphor for her own life.

I love fantasy and sci-fi novels, but I like novels in general. I’m reading Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy right now as well as The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan.

My parents are both Albanian. Both sets of my grandparents are Albanian. I’m not really sure how far it goes back, but as far as I know, I’m 100% Albanian in ethnic origin. I can speak the language–not well, unfortunately–read it, and write in it a little. I’m toeing the line between conversational and fluent.

My mom and I like to travel when we’re able to. So far, we’ve been to Albania, Greece,  France, Florida, California, Nevada, and Washington, D.C.

My friend dared me to take a picture in front of the Eiffel with a beret and a baguette.

My friend actually dared me to take a picture in front of the Eiffel with a beret and a baguette.

I have four best friends whom I’ve known for a good fourteen years. They’ve been a very integral part of my life.

I like to joke a lot, mostly in slightly uncomfortable situations. I’ve made way too many jokes in the past few days. I also really like puns. I like when other people make puns, but also when they laugh at my puns. Pun-shaming makes me sad.

Sporty Shirley

Hi everyone! First off, my name is Shirley Yau. The name “Sporty Shirley” is from one of those ice-breaker, getting to know you types of games during orientation haha. I’m 17 years old and I was born and raised in Manhattan.

Well, if you guessed I was going to talk about sports! You’re right! I absolutely love exercising. I play many sports for fun such as tennis, basketball, and handball. No, I’m not an expert or anything, I just love playing! 🙂 I was on the cross country and track team in high school, so of all the sports, running has got to be my favorite. I’m incredibly picky about my running gear, and I’ve got to say: once you go saucony, you can never go back. Their shoes are amazing, incredibly lightweight but with enough stability so you don’t end up with shin splints! I have the Kinvara 2s. I know a lot of people may hate running, but I love the feeling after you run. Runner’s high. It’s quite amazing, like a world of weight has just been lifted off your shoulders. Not to mention the benefits it has for your body, tons of toxins are released from your body when you run, so it helps with your skin! Another plus haha.

To keep my life a bit interesting, I dabble in other sports such as kick boxing, rock climbing, kayaking, and biking! I’ve also done some events such as the Color Me Rad run and I’ve gone trapezing, horse-back riding, and hiking before. Weirdly enough, I’ve actually never gone paintballing before; but fear not, it’s on my bucket list! I love going to exciting events! Like last week, my friends and I randomly just took a capoeira class, which is like a brazilian martial arts class at Nago Academy which was a really great experience. I’m the type of person who drags people to weird events haha, but they turn out to be LOADS of fun!.

Aside from that, I guess I’m into healthy eating haha. I haven’t eaten any food from stores like McDonalds, Wendy’s, Burger King, etc since I was about… 8? It’s a pretty good run haha. I hope I don’t slip up! But yea, I always try to eat foods that are healthy! And as for snacks, sorry for those allergic to nuts, but my absolute favorite bar is KIND BARS! I could eat them for days. Clif bars are alright, not nearly as good haha. I’m not too picky about what I eat though, I eat all types of food! I tend to gear towards home cooking though, to keep it healthy. I prefer cooking food myself because I know exactly what goes in it. Because of this, I like watching shows like MasterChef! But I also watch other shows too, like Grey’s Anatomy, Suits, and White Collar. I also listen to all types of music. A few of my favorite artists are: Sander van Doorn, Porter Robinson, and Tigerweather. Nice to meet all of you!
