Introduction: Ariel Yuan

Hi everyone! My name is Ariel Yuan and I am actually named after The Little Mermaid.

I was born in Queens, New York; however, my family (my parents, my older sister, and my younger brother) moved to suburbs of Poughkeepsie when I was around 7 years old. For those who have never heard of Poughkeepsie, it is a small town in the Hudson Valley located between New York City and Albany. In Poughkeepsie, I graduated from from Spackenkill High School. Spackenkill is such a small school that my graduating class only had like 120 students! Growing up in a small town had its positives but I am super excited to attend college in Manhattan and live in the 97th Street and 3rd Avenue dorms.

My intended major is business; however, I am still unsure. I am hoping to study marketing or management but I am also considering international business because I really enjoy traveling.

Like I just said, I love to travel and I have been lucky enough to travel to a couple different places. I visited states such as Florida and Massachusetts and other countries such as Canada, Taiwan, and my favorite, Spain. In spring 2012, I had the opportunity to travel to Spain with my school. Some cities we visited were Toledo, Segovia, Sevilla, Cordoba, Mijas, Granada, and Madrid. We danced the flamenco with gypsies, sat front row at a soccer game, attended processions for Holy Week, visited museums and cathedrals, and much more. In the future, I hope to travel more and study abroad. I would love to visit England, France, Italy, and Australia.

Besides traveling, some of my other hobbies include cooking, baking, reading, shopping, watching t.v. and movies, listening to music, spending time with family and friends, etc.

So that’s about it. Thanks for reading my introduction and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone else!

Nicholas Sanso

Hey hey.  My name is Nicholas Sanso but Nick works just as well.  I grew up in Staten Island but  now live in the baruch housing on 97th street and 3rd avenue.  I really can’t mention the building without mentioning the people, who are the coolest group of kids I’ve ever met.  So yea, its been a nice  change of scenary considering there is not much to do back home.

But we made do in Staten Island.  I played  football and ran track, three years on each team to be exact. Like every athlete, I had a pretty serious love-hate-relationship with my teams. They would work me to death every day and in return I would get…well, just exhausted really. It was an awesome deal. Obviously. Still, it had its upsides. Tons of the kids I played with on those teams came here to Macaulay as I’m sure many of you guys have realized.

Aside from school I have a pretty long list of experiences before the start of next year. A sort of year’s-end bucket list if you will. At the top of the list is paintball and  level 5 white water rafting (if you’re going to do it, do it big).

I’d also love to go skydiving. It looks like a lot of fun although I do sometimes have a fear of heights. If near the end of the year if I happen to have time, I also want to go rock climbing.

Although this year wasn’t too bad itself, went to Argentina with my sister and cousins. Here I am climbing on a glacier at the southern tip of Argentina. 🙂

Hi, I’m Cheng Dong

Hello my name is Cheng Dong, I graduated from the Bronx High School of Science. As of now I have not declared a major yet but hopefully I will be studying in the field of Accounting in a few years. The reason I’m interested in Accounting is probably due to my interest in math and my mother’s family history of being accountants. I am currently living in Queens, but I am from Wenzhou, China. I have spent the first half of my life growing up in China, and the other nine years here in New York. Thanks to the times I spent in both of these two nations I speak both fluent Chinese and English. I have to say that I’m influenced deeply by both Chinese and American culture, but my hobbies are more inclined to my Chinese nature. I enjoy reading Chinese fiction books online, watching Chinese TV shows online (especially those that discusses aspects of society in a humorous and easily understood language), and like many others my age I enjoy playing video games. I consider myself a fairly optimistic and humorous person, but I was not a very sociable person in high school. Now that I’m in high school I hope to do a better job connecting with my fellow classmates, so thank you for reading my introduction, I will see you in class.

Introducing : Ralph Schneider

My name is Ralph.  I introduced myself as “ridiculous”, but I’m actually kind of nice if you get to know me (I would like to think so anyway.) I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.  I am Jew-ish (I’m actually pretty Jewish, I just like to make that joke a lot.) Originally, I was opposed to writing all about myself in this post because then I would have no conversation starters to use with the people that read this and no one would ever want to talk to me again *sad face* (I get over dramatic a lot-that happens) but eventually I gave in and I was like fine, everyone else is doing it (which is totally against my mentality of being a leader not a follower) but it is homework so it is in accordance with my policy of being a hard-worker *thumbs up*.

But, enough about me.  *Strike that, reverse it* this whole thing is about me. Ahem.

I attended Brooklyn Technical High School, and it was there that I discovered my love for acting and the theatre.  I performed in three musicals during my time there.  In my first production, I played The Schoolmaster in Pink Floyd’s: The Wall (inset) Peep the mullet looking thing on my head.  Then, I played Danny Zuko in Grease (inset) Once again, peep the hair.  Last, but not least, most recently I played Fred Graham in Kiss Me, Kate. This time, don’t focus on the hair, peep the tights…they were strangely comfortable. (inset) I was even a finalist at this year’s Gershwin Awards for NYC high school musical theatre.  I am also a member of the Thomas G. Waites acting studio (classes are held in the Bernie West Theater right at Baruch-how convenient).  Hopefully, I’ll make Broadway someday!

I am also a huge baseball fan.  I played on my school’s varsity team for all four years of high school.  I am a very big fan of the New York Yankees as well as the hometown Brooklyn Cyclones (of which I am a season ticket holder).  I hope to make Baruch’s baseball team!

I am also an avid music lover! I’m sure many of you heard me sing Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” at Baruch Beginnings or Macaulay’s Freshman Mixer…or most recently “New York, New York” at Baruch’s Get Out The Vote Campaign.  You guessed it, I’m quite a big Sinatra fan.  My musical taste also includes Billy Joel, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Michael Buble, Barbra Streisand (whom I got to sing with as a part of the Brooklyn Youth Chorus-below), and Josh Groban.  I have previously been hired as a Michael Jackson impersonator (I will show you pictures on request).  I have also just joined as a member of the internationally renowned a capella group THE MACAULAY TRIPLETS!

I am also an impressionist and comedian. Go easy on me guys, it’s not as easy as it looks to be funny.  (Please disregard my mother in the background-you know how they get)

Watch!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRE4mZD_gGk

My current plan is to major in Biology and minor in theatre but that is subject to change.  My goal in life (though it may sound cliché) is to make people happy, and if I can do that in whatever job I decide to do in the future, as long as I enjoy what I am doing, then that’s all I could ever ask for.

Well, that’s basically me in a nutshell; how did I get in this nutshell? (Austin Powers reference there).  I look forward to my next four years in Macaulay.  I’ve met a bunch of great people already and I look to broaden my social horizons even more in the future.

Please take the opportunity to say hi or get to know me better

Ralph signing off!

Hi, I’m Owen Toews

Hi, my name is Owen Toews, and I’m an ITF! If you haven’t memorized this particular acronym yet, that’s okay. It stands for Instructional Technology Fellow. What it means is, I’m here to help you with anything and everything related to using technology in your creative and educational life, and in particular, with this fine seminar! But a little more about me, by way of introduction:

I was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and graduated from the University of Winnipeg, where I played shooting guard for the University of Winnipeg Wesmen men’s basketball team. I lifted weights like crazy when I was your age – and got six-dollar haircuts in Little Italy – and this is what I looked like.

Screen shot 2013-09-04 at 12.00.04 PMIn 2009, I moved to Brooklyn and started studying human geography at the CUNY Graduate Center. I study urban space, based on the assumption that cities don’t emerge naturally or organically, but are produced through human activity and social processes. Right now, I’m writing a dissertation about an urban development authority in Winnipeg called CentreVenture. I do all kinds of research for this project, including hanging around in CentreVenture territory, interviewing people, and visiting archives. Here’s a picture of me in downtown Winnipeg, hard at work.

2013-08-09 14.35.00I look forward to working with all of you this fall, as we discover the wild world of Arts in New York City. This seminar is a real treat, and I’m sure we’ll make the most of it!

Important note: categories versus tags

Hello IDC students!

Thank you all for posting such interesting and colorful introductions. We are particularly impressed with your use of multimedia. Keep up the creativity!

However, we do need to clarify the difference between categories and tags and reiterate their importance. A category is the larger, broader level of distinguishing a post – and most importantly it determines where on the site this post can be found. For instance, on a food blog a recipe for chocolate brownies would be categorized as “dessert” or “baking.” Adding this categories groups the brownie recipe with other recipes that would you bake and serve for dessert, and often filter these into a designated area of the website. But once there are many recipes under those categories, it is best to further define and separate these post with tags which are more specific, such as “chocolate,” “walnuts,” etc. Read more about this distinction here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories-vs-tags/

For the purpose of our blog, only the administrators – your professors and ITFs – will be making categories. These categories will almost always be the name of your section. If you do not use the correct category (your section), then the professor will not be able to find your post on the site and you will not get credit for your work.

As you can see, with over 60 students and 6 administrators posting to this site, and over 20 of you in each section, we need another level of organization. You should always use the tag that identifies which assignment you are completing. So far, we have “introductions” and “Brooklyn Museum.” We will soon add the last name of the author you are reading and responding to – such as “Kafka.” These tags will be the same for everyone doing that assignment, and will be used in addition to the category of your section. But – as a bonus – you can add your own tags! For example, if you found a work of art you loved at the museum, add the tag that best identifies the work – like “Monet” or “Goya” and “painting” or “sculpture”- and see if other students are writing about the same topics.

Don’t worry if you have made an error at this point. We are not trying to punish or embarrass you! What is important here is that you understand the role of information architecture when building a website, and how to organize and control these elements to ensure the usability of these sites. Yes, that is a lot of jargon, but it is the kind of vocabulary we want you to learn through using these tools! If you don’t know what these terms mean, and have questions about how to categorize and tag, ask your ITFs!!!

We are happy to help!

C is for … Christine!

Hello, I am Christine Yan!

I was born and raised in New York. I am a fairly optimistic and happy person. I have three (annoying but lovable) siblings and a cute little fishbetafish  (his name is Nemo and no he’s not a clown fish)

Currently I am interested in studying accounting. Although I am still open to exploring other areas of business, I am most intrigued by accounting. This curiosity probably sprouted when I was young; my mother is an accountant but also a Baruch alumni. She inspired me to study business by helping me spark my interest in math when I was younger. I remember struggling to do simple algebra problems, but when she guided me through the problems the numbers would dance on the page and I would magically understand.

In addition to my interests in the business field, I also enjoy playing the piano. I have been learning how to play the piano since I was in second grade. One song I’ve been meaning to learn and this song which I’m learning how to play with my sister! (It’s a duet).

In my spare time I like reading and spending time with my family and friends. I also love eating (but who doesn’t)? I especially love eating fruits and vegetable.

P.S. Recently my friend introduced an AMAZING series called Sherlock to me. I personally don’t like mysteries, but this is definitely an exception.

sherlock (Seriously you should watch it, it’s amazing!)

About Me – Joshua Hirth

My name is Josh Hirth I am from sunny South Florida (yes I am that kid.) I grew up in an Orthodox Jewish household (if you want to know why we are off Wednesday and Thursday come to me) and speak fluent Hebrew because my dad is from Israel. I attended a private Jewish high school and also spent last year abroad studying Judaism in Israel.

I am an entrepreneur at heart, although I am currently Pre-Med. In high school I spent most of my time running the clubs and committees that I founded, including the Bio-Medical Club and Wall Street 101. In addition, during the summer before senior year I bought an ice cream vending machine that I put in my school. I spent the subsequent year building up the business known as Vending4You, and we are now a publicly traded company on the Dow Jones (kidding of course, but we can all be hopeful.)

Screen Shot 2013-09-02 at 5.56.12 PM

I also built up an eBay business where I sell designer clothing for discounted prices so if your looking for some Gucci or Prada hit me up here. This past Summer my friend Zach and I toured the world: London, Paris, Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich- all using credit card points. We spent months arranging and rearranging the itinerary to maximize every point spent, and had the trip of a lifetime.

IMG_3999

The last few months I have spent working for a medical practice in Florida, marketing and transitioning the practice to Electronic Medical Records. I have also recently struck up an interest in art, particularly the works and ceramics of Pablo Picasso. Therefore, I am quite excited to be in this class and to expand my knowledge of the arts with all of you.
