“Flags” is a very contemporary, artsy kind of play. It’s done on a minimalistic, small stage with a very limited set. However, the cast and crew manage to efficiently use this small space to convey a very moving story. It’s a tale about your average American family who discovers that they had lost their son in the Iraq war. What starts off as grief turns into a very headstrong and stubborn display of infuriation as the lost son’s father hangs a flag upside down outside his house (all of the flags mentioned or seen in this play are very significant symbolically). Ultimately, the play ends in a very violent and ironic scene.
All in all, it’s a charming little play with a cast that portrays the everyday lifestyles and personalities of an average family very efficiently. Certainly, it has carries a large emotional impact; and truly makes us all question why we go to war, and what patriotism truly means.
Go see it, it’s only twenty bucks. Highly recommended (especially for having something to write up!).
