Zhang Huan’s doors
Aside from the “My America” film, I also thought that the piece on the doors was interesting as well. As Vermont said, they represented a “doorway” into the lives of these people. I agree with this. In the documentary, Zhang Huan said something along the lines of “people being able to leave a part of their lives”. By carving the images of those people onto those doors with great detail, they are preserved and live eternally. It even transcends the material world and endures the test of time. I also thought that the doors themselves were important too as those doors were a part of their identity. Of course, this is all up to interpretation.

I agree that the material he used, the doors themselves, were very important to the pieces. Something about taking pieces of the past and using them to show and preserve the past just seems so perfect and appropriate. I can’t think of a better medium for him to have done that serious of pieces on.
