The ‘pond’ is not the only thing that separates the US and the UK. as it’s claimed, George Bernard Shaw said, “England and America are two countries separated by a common language.” So, to mitigate that separation while I am here I’ve created a cheat sheet to UK english.

Wellies = Rain boots

Across the Pond =Going across the Atlantic Ocean

Fresher = Freshman

Modules = Courses

Tube/Underground = Subway

Oyster card = Metro card 

Brolly = Umbrella

Jumpers = Sweaters

Cheese Toastie = Grilled Cheese

Aubergine = Eggplant

Courgette = Zucchini

Prawns = Shrimp

Lift = Elevator

Pants = Underwear

Vest = Undershirt

Snog = Kiss

What are you reading? = What are you studying?

Flapjack = Granola

Let = Rent

Flat = Apartment

Queue Here = Wait on this Line

Subway = Underground Path

Juicy Bits = Pulp (in OJ)

Pushchairs = Strollers

Mature Cheese = Aged Cheese

Nappies = Paper Towels

Arcades = Shopping Center

Mum = Mom

Goujons = Deep Fried Chicken or Fish

Way out = Exit

Chips = French Fries

Fit = Good Looking

Birds = Slang for a Girl

Barrister = Lawyer

Biscuit =  Cookie

Car Park = Parking Lot

Holiday = Vacation

Maths = Math

Sir Name = Last Name

Post Code = Zip Code

Proper = Means the same thing, they just use it more often

Mate = Friend

Good on ya = Good job (might be a New Zealand thing tho)

Year 6th = 5th Grade

Secondary School = Middle School

Primary School = Elementary School

Zed = Zee (“Z”)

University (Uni) = College

Term = Semester

Serviettes = Napkins

Top Up = Put more money on a card

Taking the Michael = Cockney slang for the crude term of taking a piss

Taking camp = Being a camp counselor

Cheers = it means a variety of things, including thank you and way to toast

Bloke = a guy

Schedule =  Schedule, but pronounced as if it’s a “sh”

Till = cashier register

Boot = Trunk of a car

Cinema = Movie theater

Cling film = plastic wrap

Bank card = Credit card

Public School = Private School

Football = Soccer

Hob = Stove top

Nappy = Diaper

Motorway = Highway

Postbox = Mail Box

Postcode = Zipcode

Quid = Pound

Stone = British measurement that is equivalent to 14 pounds
