Haze

After watching the dance Haze in Brooklyn Academy of Music(BAM), I realized that modern dance was not only for entertaining, but also for conveying thoughts.

Haze is performed by Beijing Dance Theater and choreographed by Yuanyuan Wang. Wang is well-known for her combination of classic ballet and modern dance. Haze is “accompanied by musical selections from Henryk Górecki (including the haunting, elegiac Third Symphony) and Biosphere’s ambient electronic soundscapes”(BAM).

The word haze means a slight obscuration of the lower atmosphere, typically caused by fine suspended particles. Haze, here, is a metaphor for people’s confusion on modern economic and environmental crises. Choreography of the dance shows how people struggle and seek for reality among obscurity, and eventually find the way to the certainty. The dancers dance on a special elastic stage which seems like a huge sponge. This gives a unique effect on the whole dance and brings the audience a new feel.

This dance is very different from the “Water Stains on the Wall” I watched before, which has elements of Tai-chi. The motions in Haze looks more elegant, similar to the motions in ballet. The dancers extend their body fully, which looks very beautiful. I most like the part when they fall down one by one. They fall in a very fancy way. I also like the part when they are walking cautiously. It seems like they are seeking for new ways and trying new field, which probably stands for their struggle in the uncertain situation which I mentioned previously. At the ending part, all dancers are standing silently while watching the snow-like particles falling down. Are they waiting or meditating? I don’t exactly know. Fabulous Techniques

After seeing the paintings of Frans Hals, I found a painting from Johannes Verspronck  more attractive to me. Johannes Verspronck is a contemporary of Frans Hals. He is considered as Hals’s main rival as a portraitist in Haarlem. The following is one of his portrait of women. His portrait is quite a similar to that of Hals, but I like Johannes portrait more because his portrait, at least to me, looks brighter, cleaner, and more detailed. The person in the painting looks more real. Johannes grasped well of her expression with slight smile. By looking at the portrait, I can even feel her personality. She looks so calm and kind. How fabulous Johannes’ techniques are.

After Frans Hals Tour, I visit other exhibits. I found a great oil painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres(French, 1780–1867) in Robert Lehman Collection. This painting is a portrait of princesse de Broglie.Princesse de Broglie I really admire Jean’s fabulous painting techniques. This painting is totally like a photo; it is so lifelike. I most like her shimmering dress. The dress has its 3D effect. It looks like you can really touch it. Isn’t it true?

I start wondering how many artists still master these super techniques nowadays. For we already have great digital camera, we may not need these techniques to make portraits for people. A portrait could be produced in one second rather than several days as it was in the old time. We don’t feel curious about digital camera anymore, but we feel curious about the old painting techniques and find that they are so amazing. Technology may have replaced something, but we will always admire those great artists and their intelligence.

“Water Stains on the Wall”

If you are interested in Asian dance, you should not miss “Water Stains on the Wall”, which is performed by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, choreographed by Lin Hwai-min. This show will take place in Brooklyn Academy of Music(BAM) from Oct 12-15. BAM is currently celebrating its 150th Anniversary. All dancers wear sheer skirt-like costume. When they jump and spin, the “skirts” are fluttering, which create a great visual effect. In “Water Stains on the Wall”, Lin’s choreography combines chi kung and modern dance, using body movements to embody calligraphic art. This dance blends hard and soft motions, and integrate quick and slow moves. The mix of opposite elements does not produce any conflict, but comes out very naturally. I really like this form of dance which fuses the Eastern and Western dancing techniques and concepts and produces a new unique style. Whenever I see a great piece of dance show, I just have the impulse to become a dancer so that I would not just be an audience, but I would be a member of the show who is presenting this beautiful art. You can find some information about this show here. You can also find other events in BAM in that link.

Everything could be art

There are many interesting galleries along 24th and 23rd street in downtown Manhattan. I found art could be in so many forms after I visited those galleries. I found pictures in one gallery arouse my curiosity. The following is one of the pictures. This picture is like a photograph but the man on the roof doesn’t look real and it also looks like a painting, but the texture looks so real. I got confused. Eventually, I was told that the artist made these models in the picture and took pictures of them.courtesy of Paolo Ventura

I also found the following fancy arts. These are some unique and weird models. These models’ body are decorated with various materials such as dolls, metal, and unused stuff. When I saw them at the first sight, I was shocked. They are big and look like a group of aliens in front of me.

The following is a artificial horse made of branches. I really admire the creativity of the artist. Any most common things that we usually ignore could be used to create arts by fantastic artist. I love the saying ” art is from life but beyond life”. Under the magic hands of the artists, any ordinary things from life could be transformed into elegant artistic works. Life could be so beautiful as long as we use our imagination.

Hand in Hand Remembrance for 9/11

Today(9/10/2011),I participated in the Hand in Hand event in lower Manhattan. About 5000 people held hands to commemorate 9/11 at the exact time(8:46 am) when the north building got attacked. Even though it is such a early time at weekend, people never mind sacrificing their sleeping time for the meaningful event. The volunteers of this event started their tasks at each register station at 6:30 am. Some of them don’t live in the city. I really get touched by people’s passion on this event and their compassion for the victims. When I arrived, people at different ages were already there. Although Hand in Hand event didn’t last for a long time, during the moment of people holding hands together, we all felt the air of unity. Evil will never win because we are united fighting against the evil. You could see related news about this event here
