At the center of the cover is a line drawing of a woman’s side profile. A line extending from her eyebrow is drawn up to create a crown made up of skyscrapers also in line art style. The left end of the crown dips down to make a wreath of orange, pink, and yellow flowers around the central image. At the center bottom of the flowers say “Fall 2020”. In the background are NYC skyscrapers outlined in white and colored in with dull brown, gray, and light green which rise out over the central figure. In the middle of them is the title, “Wanderlust”. At the top left of the cover is a gray cat with a yellow moon behind him. The rest of the cover has glitter accents around the buildings and sides of the central figure and is colored from the top down in pastel purple to pastel pink in an ombre fashion.

Wanderlust

Quaran-Zine is a collection of artistic and literary representations of the pandemic’s impact on our lives and understanding of NYC.

Wanderlust— travel through pages.

Wanderlust means “a strong desire to travel”. Ironically, during a pandemic, traveling is the last of our priorities. However, the pandemic has shifted what it means to travel. While we cannot physically visit different places, our focus is present in various subjects across the country and world. Using social media and other digital outlets, we voice our activism for movements such as BLM and climate change, and fight for democracy in the 2020 election.

Our cover emphasizes what it means to be a part of something that is being looked at, but at the same time does the looking. The buildings in the background make up the NYC skyline and the cat on the top left symbolizes a creature that blends into the NYC atmosphere and has the ability to look without being noticed. The woman at the center of our cover represents the Statue of Liberty. In the past, she was a figure that was looked at. Now, we give her back her power with her crown of NYC buildings and for her refusal to be looked at by you. The flowers symbolize the beauty that lies in looking and a twist on “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Along with the heaven-like background, the flowers bring elegance to NYC— a place we call home. The beauty of the cover juxtaposes the harsh truth within the pages.
Part of wanderlust is having a strong impulse or restlessness to move and experience. Our zines showcase our experiences and present a way that satisfies our wanderlust by traveling through a person’s thoughts.

The images below will take you throughout our group’s process of creating the cover.

Image shows a figure of a woman looking to the right. To the left and right of her are flowers that connect up to form the NYC skyline in the background. At the bottom of the page are the words “Quaran-Zine” and “2020”.

This is one of our first sketches. We utilized the line art style and created a figure of a woman looking to the right. To the left and right of her are flowers that connect up to form the NYC skyline in the background. At the bottom of the page are the words “Quaran-Zine” and “2020”.

Image shows the face of a woman in the center staring straight. Her right eye is visible but her left eye is covered by a rose whose stem spirals down to where the neck of the woman would be. In a crown-like fashion, an outline of NYC skyscrapers decorate above the central figure where her head would be. Above are the words “December 2020” and “Quaran-Zine”.

This is another one of our first sketches. Also using the line art style, at the center is  the face of a woman in the center staring straight.

Image showing in the center a face of a woman and the lines lead up to form a crown of NYC skyscrapers. From the figure's left and right side emerge flowers that adorn the base of more NYC skyscrapers that decorate the background. Towards the top of the buildings is the word "title".

This is the final sketch of our project. We combined the multiple sketches we had and condensed it into one page. Likewise, the final sketch utilizes line art.
