Smell has a very strong effect on our brains. Different smells can stimulate the regions of the brain that relate to both emotion and memory. The smell of peppermint increases blood flow and increases alertness and concentration. The smell of lavender does the opposite, decreasing blood flow and stimulate sleepiness. The experiment yielded results showing how much more accurate and quicker people are able to answer basic questions while placed in an environment that has a peppermint-induced smell. When presented with those same questions, the results and reaction time is lower under a lavender induced environment.
