As students, particularly as honors students, we know it can be very difficult to find time to experience the natural world when we spend many hours of our day studying indoors. This lack of exposure to sunlight can have a significant impact on our psychological health. It has been shown in numerous studies that exposure to the sun’s rays can have a positive effect on our mental health, and potentially alleviate the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Spending all of our time indoors can have an opposite effect on our health. This is seen in those who suffer from seasonal affective disorder, a condition where those affected experience a period of depression during winter months. As we approach the colder months, it is important to be aware that even bundling up to enjoy the cold weather could be a crucial factor in the maintenance of our overall well-being.
