Blog A: Ralph Lemon’s The Scaffold Room

I honestly have no idea what to say. Mostly because I had not a single idea of what was going on.

Did that art installation have anything in the beginning have anything to do with it? There were books on gay sex and carved wooden figures and t shirts. I don’t know. What was the point?

Then the actual performance was in this interesting room. A pitch black room with a metal frame cube at one end and a white screen beside it. It was a really interesting stage. There were three distinct parts of the performance it seemed, with one woman each for the first two and three men dancing in the last. Actually there were a lot of interesting elements. Such as utilizing the top of the cube for the mattress and breaking the wall of the back, the moving of the screen, the moment when they decided to hand out chairs instead of setting them in the beginning, and the usage of wigs in the performances of the women. I liked how the moved the stage from the ‘front’ of the room to the ‘back’ of the room too. What I don’t get is how anything fit together. Was there any meaning at all in the performance? I guess I could find some meaning in how they were all African American performers, but I don’t know what that means. I suppose anal sex was mentioned a lot too. Was it too shock the audience or something? Rebel against societal conventions of what was acceptable in conversation???? But in that case all the other stuff should have been shocking too. But mostly it just didn’t make sense!!!!!

As as you can see by my usage of punctuation marks, I am really frustrated at this performance. Why?????????????? That’s my question for this performance. Am I missing some cultural references???? Is there some underlying meaning? Was it meant to shock the audience? Mostly I was really bored and sleepy. If that was the point, surely there were less intensive ways to go about it. I want to try and analyze this but mostly I can’t make any sense of it. If that was the intention, then good job. This was worse than the last one with the endless folk dancing, I didn’t think it possible.

I share the same level of confusion as Jessica towards the performance as a whole. When we saw the art installation before the performance, I was completely blank as to what to expect. The wooden figures, films showing people and giraffes, and books on sex seemed to have no correlation. Throughout the actual performance I tried to see the connection of these items to what the performers spoke and did to no avail.
Going into the room, I found the space the be interesting and had some hope for what was to come. My eyes were immediately drawn to the rectangular structure within the black room. The screens surrounding it and the bed on the top of it were at odds and I was curious to see how the two would be used. My hopes were completely dashed when the performance began. Seemingly random clips, including one of a sobbing woman, played on repeat while a woman bounced on the bed at various tempos and I was left perplexed. What was the purpose of each element and what effect were they supposed to have? Whatever Ralph Lemon intended was not conveyed to me at all. The following parts of the performance as well, from the women singing to reading descriptions of sex from books, did not link together at all. In addition, the transitions between performers and topics were sometimes abrupt or nonexistent. There would be especially awkward moments in the pause between when one performer would walk out and another would come in. The references made by the first woman about Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and the fans as well as the reasons behind the loud screams by the second woman also all completely passed by me.The end with the dance by the three men just topped off my confusion.
Although the performance as a whole seemed like a mess of random events to me, there were a few interesting elements. The wigs the woman used, the way they sang, and the deliberateness of each motion gave a sense of intent to their movements. Also, the use of the entire room as the two female performers switched and when the dance started in the area that was at the back of the audience was different. Overall, however, I was disappointed in the performance. The elements were at odds with each other and did not transmit any sense of coherence to me. Perhaps if I had understood some of the references I would have enjoyed it more, but since I did not, I was left unsatisfied by the performance.
