Transnational Ties

Not much has changed between the immigrants of the past and today when it comes to transnational ties. People still come to the United States for the same reasons of economic prosperity and a better life and opportunities. They leave behind a whole life in their home country physically but not emotionally; it’s nearly impossible to sever ties.

My parents, for example, still keep in touch with their siblings and friends from Romania. As Foner states, technology is a great aid in this. People no longer have to take boats to see or talk to their loved ones. Planes make the process of traveling back home much faster. But, they don’t even have to take planes. Phone calls, video chatting, e-mails, and the like make communication quick, easy, and accesible.

Pluralism and multiculturalism is also more widely accepted nowadays. There is less discrimination and racism based on ethnicity or skin color. People are able to live in America and still celebrate the culture and traditions of their homes. As Foner states, there are many celebrations of ethnicities such as parades. One example is the 11 day San Gennaro Feast in Little Italy celebrating the Italian heritage with food and music, as well as religious aspects. Both their American citizenship and their ties to their homeland can be embraced.
