Self Portrait

O.   What does Art mean?

I may be taking a trite, unoriginal, and perhaps boring stance, but art is the medium through which a person may express oneself. Art is the byproduct of a consciousness from someone who views the world in any capacity. Art may add to the world or be a mirror of it, but it is an often inexpressible representation of an artist’s psyche — a brief glimpse into humanity, propelled by the idea of human nature.
1.    What is your favorite art form?

My favorite art form is fiction. However, you must bear in mind that I’m a fiction writer and aspiring novelist, so I’m more than a little biased. I think being able to articulate oneself through words is the clearest, concisest way of sharing one’s meaning.
2.    What is your favorite historical period?

My favorite historical period is the 60s, since it brought about an era of change in America. It symbolized the rejection of complacency, and sparked revolutionary ideas suppressed by centuries of repression.
3.    What is your academic/ non-academic strength?

My academic strengths are in humanities courses, ranging from Social Science to English. My non-academic strength is being a somewhat decent writer.
4.    Do you feel comfortable with new technologies?

New technologies inspire me. They reveal new things to me, and allow my mind to think more freely about the world and what’s possible in it. So yes, I’m pretty comfortable with state-of-the-art technology, as long as I know how to turn the thing on.

5.    How would you rate your writing skills?

I’ve been writing both creatively and academically for quite a few moons, so I’d say, in the scope of the world, if Stephen King wrote at a 10 level, I’d probably be a 7, with structure as my main demerit. However, compared with peers, I might fall above that by a bit.

What does Art mean?

Art is the means of expression of an idea. Winston Churchill once said “Without innovation, art is a corpse.” Art is not just having an idea; one can have thoughts and feelings about almost anything they experience in the physical (and metaphysical) world. Art is the means by which one communicates this idea.  Virtually any medium can be used, and this is what makes art such a broad-based phenomenon. I feel as though art truly is one of humanities greatest accomplishments.

What is your favorite art form?

Music is definitely my favorite art form. It is universal, like most art, but has a greater emphasis on this aspect than most art forms. People from any corner of the Earth can listen to the same tune of music and feel the same raw power and emotion evoked by the piece.

What is your favorite historical period?

I love almost any ancient history: Egyptians, Romans, and the ancient Chinese. Out of the entire “ancient” era, I would have to say that my favorite period was Ancient Greece. I am in love with Greek mythology, as well as Greek philosophy. I feel as though the people from that era were gifted in so many ways, from art to mathematics, and I find it very fascinating to learn about all of the aspects of this era.

What is your academic/ non-academic strength?

I love chemistry and mathematics. Physics is great too. Most people view these subjects as being filled with mundane and useless calculations, but the applications of these subjects are immense. I find it amazing how a single problem can stump your brain for hours and force you to think in a completely new way.

My nonacademic strength would definitely be music, particularly with percussion instruments.  Rather than focusing on playing a drum-set like most drummers, I’ve played the snare drum for a local marching band for two years, as well as melodic instruments like the vibraphone and xylophone.

Do you feel comfortable with new technologies?

I can turn on a computer,  use basic applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and can use email and chat. Other than that, I wouldn’t say I’m too computer savvy. I’ve used a computer a lot before, but I’ve never had the need to perform anything complicated such as writing programs. I even admit that trying the post this message didn’t come naturally to me; I had to go step-by-step through the tutorial.

How would you rate your writing skills?

I don’t even have any good skills.

What do you mean?

You know, like nunchuk skills, writing skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills… Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills!
(If you are unfamiliar with the film Napoleon Dynamite, then please disregard the former quote)

My writing skills aren’t too bad. I’ve taken AP English before and have had challenging writing courses throughout high school, so I would say I’m familiar with both creative and analytic writing. But by no means would I say I’m a great writer; it’s a skill I’ve always found to be challenging and require a lot of thinking.

Self Portrait

0. Art is soul, energy, the animus, the breath, thought, spirit, mind, reason, heart, feeling, conscience, ego, one’s being, put into life. Art is that feeling you get when you’re about to talk to that person you like, when you see your leader on television and feel that inspiration, when you read about 13 year old kids saving lives and feel proud, when you find out your relationship will no longer work out and you feel that emptiness, when you feel amazingly great about the day and wish to convey your great feeling, when you’re excruciatingly bored and want to undo it. Art is the abstract side of conventional human beings.

1. My favorite art forms are film and photography. Film is one of the most profound art forms in the sense that it can encompass imagery, sound, and writing into one medium. Photography does not have the benefit of sound or a script, but still images can also be deep and reflective because the viewer is left to his own devices to understand what the photographer wishes to portray.

2. My favorite historical period is the 50’s. I like the 50’s because the clothes were awesome and I love Lucy was showing on TV.

3. My academic strength is writing, more specifically short essays or creative, concise pieces. I also write for fun, mostly poetry, so writing is pretty natural for me. Non-academically, my strength is photography and imagery. I’m an amateur photographer and I’m also a film connoisseur.

4. I do feel comfortable with new technologies. I learn new things fairly quickly and can adapt like Jason Bourne in Istanbul. If I were amazingly good with Apple computers, I just might call myself a genius.

5. My writing skills are pretty professional. I’ve written for magazines and school papers and one of my hobbies is poetry. I wrote album reviews for a magazine and my mom is also the Publisher/CEO of a Spanish-language newspaper, so I’ve grown up with harsh critics and editors. I don’t enjoy writing for school, but I do what I must.

Response to Assignment 1

Post a short response to these Questions:

O.   What does Art mean?

Art is, in simplest terms, an expression of emotions, conflicts, views and so much more. Whether it be through dance, painting, writing, or film (and so many more), art can mean different things for each person. It can help express strong emotions, or show views about situations in society or just entertain.
1.    What is your favorite art form?

My favorite art form is dance because the way a person can embody emotions (most of the time without any dialogue) makes it all the more powerful for me.
2.    What is your favorite historical period?

While sort of random, my favorite historical period is the Tang Dynasty in China. After watching a show exhibiting the traditional dances from the dynasty, I was awed by the grace and simplicity and yet how powerful each dance was.
3.    What is your academic/ non-academic strength?

My academic strength is history and I would like my non-academic strength to be singing but it hasn’t worked out yet.
4.    Do you feel comfortable with new technologies?

Once I learn how to use them properly,  I am comfortable with new technologies and most of the time, I like learning how to use new things.
5.    How would you rate your writing skills?

I would rate my writing skills 8/10. I am satisfactory but there is definitely room to improve.

  1. Art is the physical product of one’s feelings and opinions. It can be in virtually any form, aesthetically pleasing or chaotic and disjointed, as long as the artist’s intent is expressed and able to be interpreted.
  2. My favorite form of art is architecture. I appreciate that each building, bridge, tunnel, and any other construction, takes not only an eye for beauty, but also mathematic and engineering skills.
  3. My favorite historical period is the Romantic Era. The poetry and artwork from that time are all very emotional as well as logical, and very thought invoking.
  4. My academic strengths lie in the sciences, especially Chemistry and Physics. I also really enjoy learning grammar, literature, and European history. My non-academic strengths include my sensitivity and my ability to forgive easily.
  5. I feel very comfortable with new technologies once learning how to use them.
  6. I don’t consider writing to be one of my strengths and I hope it improves over the coming semesters. At this point, I would give myself a 6/10.

0. What does Art mean?

Art is creative and original expression which can be visual, audible, physical, or a combination appealing to the senses and evoking emotions.

1. What is your favorite art form?

My favorite art form is drawing because of the incredible range it allows the artist. A drawing can be anything from scribbles in the margins of notes to large and elaborate technical pieces. I often draw on my own for leisure, using a graphics tablet and computer program.

2. What is your favorite historical period?

My favorite historical period is during the 1960s and 1970s because of the erupting social change. The psychedelic art movement interests me because I enjoy all the bright colors.

3. What is your academic / non-academic strength?

I am strong in the areas of math and science, especially biology. In high school I took AP Calculus and a higher level two year biology course.

4. Do you feel comfortable with new technologies?

I feel quite at home with recent technologies, although I’m sure there are ones that I am unfamiliar with. I am good with computers and am pursuing Computer Science as a major, so I am confident that I should be able to learn anything new quickly.

5. How would you rate your writing skills?

I would rate my writing skills at about an 8 out of 10. I consider myself good but definitely not the best.

Self? Portray-it.

1) Art is what happens when someone forgets to be afraid. Art occurs when the soul takes the brain on a date. Art is everyone’s best times and worst times. Art can’t really be described, it’s the other 90% of the brain and it has to be experienced.

2) My favorite art form is music, and I think that the most artistic music falls in place in pop. It’s something about the way the pop artist tries to connect with humanity and society as a whole and not just some underground demographic.

3) The best historical period is our post-everything instant gratification 21st century! People think that we’re getting worse as a society but i think we have and often take the opportunity to use everything that we have already discovered and go deeper into what and who we are.

4) My academic strength is writing and, particularly, grammar. I nitpick sometimes when it comes to that stuff. Non-academically, I have a few years of guitar experience and am pretty good at tennis. My weakness is math. Good God I hate math. Down with math.

5) Of course I feel comfortable with new technologies! I love everything about computers and the like. Sure, I don’t know how to program or anything, but i don’t know how to make chicken parmesan either and that sure as hell doesn’t stop me from eating it!

6) I’m good at writing. I’m not the best and I’m not going to try and sound like I am, but I like the sound of my own voice and I like it even more on paper, so I try and make sure it sounds good. Just as long as I’m not doing math. Ugh.

Yo.

1.    What is your favorite art form?

My favorite art form is music. Each song has its own personality. Music contains energy that is transferred to the listener, sometimes intensely, other times slowly. Music does more than make you move, it makes you feel. It can really get inside of you, from the moment you first start nodding your head, to the point where you are flailing your arms and jumping around. Music is poetry, melody and emotion. My favorite of all is soundtrack music which can create a range of atmospheres. You can put on your headphones, turn up the volume and let your own imagination ride along with the music.

Self Portrait

O. What does Art mean?

Art means creativity. It is the way one expresses his or her innermost feelings. Art allows a person’s true personality to come out, for you can tell a lot about a person based on the art that originates from them. Art is an escape from the problems of the world, as it allows you to leave those problems behind for some time while you focus on your work.

1. What is your favorite art form?

My favorite art form is music. Although I cannot play an instrument, I do appreciate those that can. I have known many people who could play an instrument very well, and I have always been amazed at how they do it.  It takes many years of hard work and dedication to master an instrument, and it is this difficulty that makes me appreciate it so much.

2. What is your favorite historical period?

My favorite historical period is World War II to the present because so many events take place in every decade. Technological advances were enormous during this time and daily life was greatly changed. From the atomic bomb to landing on the moon to all the events taking place today, history is constantly being made every day.

3. What is your academic / non-academic strength?

My academic strength is the sciences, particularly biology and chemistry. I find these two subjects very interesting because they teach us about how the world we live in functions, as well as how we, as human beings, work. Science, in general, has contributed greatly to our understanding of our planet, our universe, and us. My non-academic strength is my ability to not give up. If I do not understand something, I will keep studying that particular aspect until I finally understand it.

4. Do you feel comfortable with new technologies?

I feel very comfortable with new technologies. Whenever I see new technologies on television or on the Internet, I am always interested in them. If I buy something new, I cannot wait to take it out of the box to see how it works. The MacBook’s that we received are amazing pieces of technology that I feel very comfortable with.

5. How would you rate your writing skills?

I would rate my writing skills as 9/10 because I think I write very well, but there is room for improvement. I tend to write much more than is needed, which is something I have to work on.

What does Art mean?

Art is a form of self expression. It’s a way for the artist to get his feelings out and illustrate an idea or concept important to him.  It is also a way for the artist to represent who he is through the way he sees things and how he chooses to portray those things.

What is your favorite art form?

My favorite art form is dance. I think dancing, especially ballroom and latin dancing, is amazing. It takes a lot of skill to be able to dance and make it look effortless and I love watching people dance, especially since I don’t know how to dance myself.

What is your favorite historical period?

My favorite historical period is the one we’re living in. I like the current time period because I can see the art evolve and I can understand it better. Its easier to picture the circumstances in which that art was created.

What is your academic/ non-academic strength?

My academic strength lies in the sciences. I want to be a doctor so it is essential for me to have an interest in science and be good at it.  My non-academic strength is my patience. I am very patient with even the most annoying things and have the ability to be polite even in the most unpleasant situations.

Do you feel comfortable with new technologies?

I feel relatively comfortable with new technologies. I don’t know how to use all the new technologies but I can quickly to figure it out.

How would you rate your writing skills?

I used to have very good writing skills but I feel like they have deteriorated since I have not had to write essays for a very long time. I would give myself about a 7 out of 10.
