Corona, Queens, which is under the zip code 11368, is a lower middle class neighborhood located in the northwest side of Queens, New York. According to Lawrence Lanahan’s “Every Day is Moving Day”, Robert Coe first settled Corona as far back as 1655. Going into Corona, we gained a much deeper understanding of the community. Though some members of our group had previously lived in the area, we all gained a better understanding of the culture and cuisine of the Hispanic community there and how the community has evolved and adapted since its inception. Along with this, looking at the neighborhood through the scope of our Peopling in NYC seminar, we were able to pick out details and extrapolate ideas we otherwise would not have even considered such as the reasons as to why the store owners appealed to different nationalities using their flags. Corona has seen many changes over the years due to its industrialization and incorporation of new groups of people, ultimately leaving their own legacies in this neighborhood of historical and actual diversity that then leave their marks on it. The culture, language, and style of this neighborhood has been altered steadily over the passage of time, reflecting the ever-changing face of New York City. Experiencing first hand the culture of the community like scientists doing field work, rather than reading about it, made the venture truly enjoyable and we all had a great time.
