Espiritu Andino

This group consists of 5 musicians who enjoy performing the music of the indigenous culture of South America. This includes the countries Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. This type of music is rather relaxing and soothing. However, in native cultures, this type of indigenous music played a larger role in Andean culture. Often times, this type of music would be used to perform rituals or ceremonies that emphasized a special connection that the performer would have with nature. Because of this, most instruments that are used by indigenous musical groups are made from natural resources.

The section above is a small sample of the music that Espiritu Andino enjoys playing. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform at Grand Central Station. The first thing that I noticed about the performers was the types of instruments that were being used. There were the basic drums and guitar that we see in a lot of musical groups. Next, I saw two different types of flutes which I found to were actually pan flutes. Pan flutes have played a large role in Andean music in the past. It seems right to see it in this musical group. Next, I took a look at my environment. A large majority of the public would take a look at the performances for a second and simply walk away. I feel as if the disparity in cultures is making this type of music unappealing at first glance. I enjoyed listening to the Andean musical styles of South America.
