December 6: Storyboarding & Movie Workshop

Today’s class was so much fun! After the cut is a quick recap of what we did before everyone broke up into their groups to work on their movies. You can find the PowerPoint and handout at the end of this post !

  • Distributed a handout adapted from “Communicating Science: How to create a short video about your research in a day”
  • Introduced storyboarding as a way to transition research into a narrative and/or visual storytelling;
  • Learned about the three act structure then watched the short video “Stories From the Blue” by David J. Ruck, then we tried to determine when the different components (introduction, Act I, Act II, Act III, and conclusion) began and ended.
  • Class discussion about adapting the science poster components to the three act structure plus intro/conclusion;
  • In-class activity: storyboard the process “making a sandwich” using four index cards.

I strongly suggest checking out the rest of David J. Ruck’s blog  Field Notes for tips about making movies, interviews, and other great info to help with your projects.
