AIDS AT HOME

This embroidered piece of art was made in 1973. During that time, young girls would practice needlework by embroidering the alphabet. The description states that the lettering in this art piece hints at a “innocence interrupted by HIV, at the same time the virus becomes a part of everyday life”. What struck me about this piece is the simplicity at first glance (the ABC’s), yet the complexity as you take a closer look. You can see the needle still hanging on the thread, which gives it an unfinished look. At the same time, the red color of the letters HIV and of the grass, in a sense draws the illness down to the house, depicting that the illness has become kind of “normal”.
