My trip to the NYC Body Exhibit

IMG_2593

A few weeks ago, I visited the body exhibit near Times Square. It was so much more interesting that I ever thought it would be! When I was little I was disgusted by dead bodies, blood, and dead things in general. As I got older, I grew more and more curious about what was in my body. The simplest muscles and body parts play an essential part of our everyday lives, and most people don’t seem to appreciate it as much. For example, we need our legs to walk, but once we twist our ankle, we are prohibited from doing the simplest task of walking.

When I went to the exhibit, the bodies were positioned in such an art-sy way on display. For instance, a man was holding his own skin in his hand; or a man holding his own organs in one hand. It was very interesting to see an actual organ in the exhibit. The picture above was the only picture I was allowed to take in the exhibit. It was amazing how each organ in our bodies play such an important role.

I absolutely loved how they positioned the bodies. This exhibit wasn’t just to learn but to experience what is in our bodies. I wonder what inspired the creator, Gunther von Hagen, of the exhibit to make such an exhibit. It was very interesting to see what’s in our bodies in 3D rather than in a book. I’m curious to who plans out the positions for the bodies. I’m also wondering about the physics behind holding the cadaver in place. For example, some models have the cadavers standing on one foot.

The Holidays

Yay! The holidays are coming! When I think of the holidays, I think of all the decorations. Whatever holiday it is, every holiday has an art to it. Have you guys ever thought of that before? Especially around Christmas, I feel that there’s art is everywhere. For example, this sculpture is decorated for the holidays. Also, the tree for the Rockefeller Center went up. The lights, the angels, they’re all art. The decorations people put up for the holidays are art. They express the holiday spirit. The art is what lifts the people’s spirit to get them into the holiday spirit. The art of decorations have a strong influence towards the people. I know it does to me. It makes me happy as I spend it with the people I love.

How about you guys? Don’t you feel happy looking at the holiday decorations?

The Beauty of the Night

I’ve noticed that in the night, Manhattan has much more beauty. For example, this Empire State Building. Honestly, during the day, I just look up and say, “Wow it’s the tallest building here in Manhattan.” I didn’t see the beauty of it except how long it took to build the building. However, when I was walking down the street, I was amazed. The different fluorescent colors at night made a real difference. The tallest building was shining so brightly. It looked like a piece of art in 3D form. It was really cool to see this. I wonder why they choice to light these specific colors. Then I thought that it was very patriotic since the colors are the colors of the American flag. I also remembered when they lit up the Filipino’s colors as well when the Philippines were hit with the Earthquake. The Building delivers a message through the use of its colors and lights. I never came to thinking this until I saw the colors of this building.

What do you guys think about the lights?

Complexions Review

I never would have thought that I would ever attend a ballet in my life, but I am glad that I can now say they I have. After Fun Home and out class trips, my expectations for the Complexions Ballet at the Joyce Theater were extremely high. After all, Fun Home was amazing, Meeting Greg Broom was great, and so on. Although, the dancers were amazing (even that may be an understatement) and the dances were very well coordinated, it fell below my expectations. That is not to say I did not enjoy it, I just thought I would like the performance as a whole much more than I actually did. Perhaps it was because they were not contemporary enough for me. It seems that the dances slowly progressed and became more and more modern.

It started off with a dance titled Moon Over Jupiter by Dwight Rhoden. The dance did have my attention for the most part, but that was mainly because it was the first time I ever watched a ballet. Their outfits were interesting and unexpected. Actually it was barely existent. I wonder why they chose those specific outfits for this dance. This number made me realize how much running and moving ballet really requires. To have to run off stage and run to their exact spot is very difficult but they executed it flawlessly. At times this dance was up beat but at many times it was slow, I was just wondering when they would move to the next dance.

The second dance, Recur byAlejandro Cerrudo,  was slower than the first. I expected it to be faster. I just could not enjoy it. Although I do understand that the dancers cannot continuously do strenuous and quick dances. This must have been the time that dancers could relax more. Although it looked just as difficult.

The third number, Innervision by Jae Man Joo, was much better. It was upbeat for the most part and the music was much more lively. Although it was ballet, it added more modern aspects. The movements were faster and the emotions on the dancers faces were not serious like they were in the other two. It kept me awake and engaged and that is what I felt a performance should do.

My high expectation was probably unfair because it was the result of always enjoying our other class trips more than expected. My expectations for past trips were always much lower so that was likely the reason I always enjoyed them more. However, this was enjoyable and was a positive experience. It was when I realized that being so close to the stage is a strange experience. I could smell and see the sweat, hear  the movements, and see the emotions on the faces of the actors. Would I go to another ballet after this? Definitely, but I will pray they are more like the third number.

The MOMA – René Magritte

The Museum of Modern Art is always an interesting place to visit. Although, I did not have the opportunity to see the “Soundings: A contemporary Score,” exhibit, I did have the chance to see the work of René Magritte. Simply put, his work was very distinctive and unique and yet, at times seemingly familiar. This comes at no surprise especially since the description of his work, which was on the wall outside of the room, mentions that his technique is to “defamilarize the familiar.” Besides this technique, his work has more to it than we see on the surface.

Let’s start with his work titled, Le Faux Miroir. What we see is an eye with clouds in it.  What we can easily depict is that the person is looking at the sky and sees clouds. However, it could also be you looking at someone’s eye through a window and he’s looking at you. Although, at first glance it may look like a mirror reflection of an eye. An interesting detail to note is that the eye has no eyelashes. Even though this painting is nothing but an eye, looking at it I sense that the owner of this eye is deep in thought. To me this would also make sense because people, many times, are deep in thought when they look out of windows. Although there is no evidence to prove anything except it is an eye, it is much more than an eye to me.

Then there is the work titled, The Interpretations of Dreams. This was very familiar because it was on the cover of Ways of Seeing. My favorite thing about this work is that I have the opportunity of seeing it in real life after seeing it on the cover of a book. There always that feeling of accomplishment when you see a real work. This work shows the difference between words and pictures. It’s hard to understand and I have little idea of what it should mean. It’s mysterious to me and I actually like that about it. It has the word “door” under a picture of a horse’s head. There is a clock above the word “wind” and so on. The words and pictures do not seem to match. It enhances the idea that things aren’t always what they seem.

Unknown

Another notable painting to me is one titled, Not to be Reproduced. This painting shows a man and book in front of a mirror. The oddest thing is, the back of the man’s head shows up in the mirror but the book is correctly flipped. It took me a while just to realize the book was correctly flipped because the attention is on the person. It makes you wonder why Magritte decided to do that. According to the description the museum gave, it has a connection with Poe. Regardless, I think the title fits because perhaps the face cannot be reproduced.

The paintings in the whole exhibit showed a deep connection with each other. I noticed recurring ideas and pictures, such as the sky, a tuba, the human body, and mirrors. The idea behind Magritte’s work is perception. The things we see are not always what they seem. He makes even the most familiar things foreign and distorted, yet there is no doubt that they are also noticeable.

And here’s a rose for all of you.

Complexions

Having never gone to an official ballet performance I wasn’t to sure as to what I should expect with the Complexions performance. Sure, I had seen performances on Television before but, all of them seemed to be in cartoons and more often than not depicted women wearing the infamous tutu that were complimented with pink tights and shoes. Despite having these ideas circulating in my head before the performance I decided to put them aside and view the performance without any other influences rather than the essence of the performance itself. The performance was taking place in the Joyce Theatre, a small theatre in respect to many of the others that I had been in before but, nonetheless, a nice and rather luxurious place.

After walking in and taking my seat within the performance hall I looked around and everything about the place looked like a broadway performance. From the seating arrangement to the deep red curtains covering the stage, the aura that the place created was appropriate for what was to come next. Once the lights dimmed and the curtains were raised a few people stood on the stage in a statue like composure all waiting for the cue to begin. Right from the start I knew that this ballet wouldn’t be one with tutus or pink ballet shoes and knowing that became far more attentive and interested than I originally was.

As the performance began, all of the dancers began moving and executing carefully choreographed movements which really made the performance and the entire idea of ballet come alive in my eyes. The amount of effort each individual was putting into the performance truly made it self known as all of them did actions that most people probably couldn’t even attempt to do. As they raced from one side of the stage to the other all in harmony with one another, the beauty of their effort and the performance began to reveal itself. With such swift and carful movements, all of which having to be learned by each individual within their team to make the performance that we so calmly sat down and saw, required an immense amount of effort. Knowing that and for them to make it so easily seen for us as their sweat literally shot through the air while all of them gasped for air, I realized that I had a new found respect for ballet. One that I never knew I had but after seeing the Complexions performance and the amount of work and devotion that went into creating it, it was one that was well deserved.

Complexions Performance

I really enjoyed the performance. I remember watching the videos of performances during class that day and thinking, “Nope, this doesn’t really interest me.” Maybe I was just really tired and didn’t look forward to anything at all that day. But I think sitting up front really helped me keep awake. I couldn’t stop staring at the dancers because they were just amazing. We were so close that you could literally see the sweat flying off their heads as they danced across the stage.
First off, I found their costumes interesting. For the performance, they were wearing very simple and tight clothing, which makes the viewers pay close attention to their bodies (for example, there was one dance where two/three men were wearing nude leggings). As mentioned in class, modern dance has several attributes such as the focus on the body (as opposed to the limbs, which is emphasized by the high jumps of classical ballet, but we did not see many high jumps during this performance), the coordinated breathing and movements (the audience could hear their loud breathing and I remember they all breathed at certain times at a certain beat), and the relationship with the floor. The fact that the dancers were all moving closely together with close contact with the floor really supports the ballet’s claim: “The company’s foremost innovation is that dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them.”
For me personally, the most interesting part was the second part. I remember it began with no music playing; if I remember correctly, it sort of sounded like a steady ticking or beeping. Because there wasn’t any background noise at the beginning, the audience could clearly hear the dancers’ steady breathing. The more solemn dance was also emphasized by the dancers’ black outfits. I particularly liked this act because I felt that the quieter performance compared to the other two made it more intense and it gave it a suspenseful atmosphere. I also remember a part where there were two dancers in the front, while a lone male dancer was in the back and behind him was a white screen. It was interesting how there were two different things happening at the same time; I remember there were other parts where there were dancers on both sides of the stage and they weren’t doing the same dance. I found this a bit confusing, but perhaps it would have been easier for people who were sitting more far back since they would have a wider view of everything that was happening on stage.

I liked the last part too, especially since I found it more relevant. Their outfits were more like those that we would wear, and the music was also more familiar. I remember during class that day, Professor Eversley mentioned how many of the modern dances that we see today in music videos actually use a lot of the movements used in ballet. I definitely saw the resemblance during the last part.

Overall, I really liked this performance, considering it the very first ballet I ever attended.

Visit to Galerie Richard

Today, I walked out of school unsure of what to do, or where to go. I was headed towards the High Line Park, until I bumped into a few art galleries. One of them was called Galerie Richard, and the works of William Bradley were exhibited there. Bradley’s work is exceptional. It looks simple at first, but if you take the time to stare at the paintings a bit longer, a lot can be discovered.

Bradley_red

For example, this image up top is one of his works, and the reason why its so interesting is because no one knows what’s going on. Of course there has to be a meaning associated with the colors, and different shades of red and blue. When it comes to color, I always associate it with emotions. Considering the amount of red in the painting, one could say that the artist is angry, or is upset about something. Or maybe he thought these were the best three colors to use to grad the viewer’s attention. So that’s that for the colors. How about the fact that there’s so much overlapping going on in the artwork? How come things weren’t more spread out? I don’t like seeing all of that congestion in the center, so I think the artist should have used all the space in the painting. Now there’s too much red in the painting. But there is in fact one thing that I like: the different hues of color is something that makes this painting stand out. The light blue and darker shades of blue, and bright red and crimson, make the panting look bold. What I mean is, I believe this painting isn’t just an example of paint splattered on a paper. There’s more to it, but to find out, we’d have to go through Bradley’s imagination. This painting is called “Fun and Games.” It does look like some of the drawings I made when I was younger, so I guess Bradley really did use his imagination.

Bradley_pacman

I didn’t know what to think of this one when I saw it, but all I knew was that it was real cute. Many thoughts came to my head upon seeing this image. First, I thought of Pacman, then I thought of a fetus, and lastly I thought of a person’d head, too consumed with the problems in the world. I tried to make sense of what I saw, and I came up with that last conclusion, because I saw blue and green on the sides of the giant circle. Those colors and dripping from the person’s mouth, so it could portray greed too. Its a weird drawing, and I feel even more weird trying come up with explanations for the weird painting. I wish Bradley could explain what he was drawing and why.

Message #1: An Original Poem

Hey class, here’s a poem I would like to share with you guys. I wrote it myself, and its straight from my journal. Enjoy!

Message #1:

These motives are insane

Living in peace, and not aware

of all those stuck in pain

I turn on the news, and just stare

You’re dancing, and you’re laughing

And doing whatever else you do

But you never take the time

to consider what the poor are going through

The reporter tells you lies

and you don’t even want to learn

Not until the day of your own demise

Until life took its wild turn

An “American” does not exist

If my thoughts are not yet heard

And if no one wants to hear it

I guess an “American” is absurd

You’re gullible and illiterate

A “happy” life is not there

The truth is left unsaid

In reality they don’t care

As long as they have a house

and car, and looks much more than good

They will never care about you

It was implied you understood

There are bigger things in life

than the numbers you pursue

Whether it’s the money or the grade

All of it will fade

The day death will come for you.

I wrote this poem to portray the corruption in our government. When we vote for people and expect them to do things for us, and then come to find out that these representatives were looking out for themselves and not the community or country as a whole, it hurts. So this is my message to them, and I want the people in Congress to take a look at this and reply. I want them to explain to me why they tell us they’ll fix problems with this country, the laws, the systems, and ways of running this nation, but they never do. I want them to explain to me why Immigration reform has been kept on that agenda for five years now, when the issue was supposed to be resolved three years ago. Money leads to greed, and that greed needs to go if we want to proceed and succeed in becoming a better nation.

Complexions Review

The Complexions performance at the Joyce Theater was quite an experience. Going to the movie theater, baseball games, and other large events, I would think front row, or very close to front row seats are awesome. They make us feel top notch, first class, and are supposed to be good thing. However, front seats at the Joyce Theater was not a good idea at all. It was nerve-racking, because the dancers were sweating and breathing, and I felt like I was too close to them. Personally, I like to keep a distance from people, and I felt like I was making them even more nervous and adding to their tension by being all up in their faces. It got to the point where I could see the sweat on their foreheads dancing off into the air, and I was afraid some of it would land on me. Therefore, no more front seats ever again for me, especially at a dance performance.

The professor said we would be witnessing a ballet performance, so I was expecting something like the Nutcracker. For some reason, I also thought the performance would be boring, because I don’t really pay attention to watching dance, unless I’m watching myself dance. However, the performance blew me away, and I loved the way the performers kept their energy levels up the whole time, especially towards the end. It was interesting to see their moods change throughout all three parts of the performance. I had questions in my head that were left unanswered, and I believe that’s something awesome about the performance: the curiosity kept me glued to my seat. Is there something I’m supposed to understand from the performance? Why is she making those faces? How come he’s moving so slowly? There were moments when I thought I would understand something by the end of a segment of the performance, and there were moments when I was feeling the tensions of the performers, based on their body language.

I absolutely enjoyed the third part of the performance, and I definitely started clapping to the beat. The performance was exceptional, and the dancers were fantastic. Their energy kept me awake and going as well, because if they started losing it, I would have fell asleep in that seat, considering how late it was and exhausted I was that night. That would have been a disaster for somebody sitting in front row seats!
