Responsive Design for Library Site
The library initiated a project to make the current website responsive to all desktop and hand-held devices. When launched in 2009, the site was not designed with hand-held devices in mind, such as the iPad or smartphone. The problem exists for many websites on the internet today. Users must pinch and spread the screen in order to view webpages. Since each webpage on the library site uses several html tags for each part of the navigation, a new approach was needed to restructure the layout and utilize as much screen space as possible. The strategy necessitated the development of a flexible grid, a flexible banner image, and a revision of the website code. Applying media queries to the cascading style sheets (CSS), the library allows website pages to be resized for two particular devices, the standard iPad and any smartphone.
