Mahatma Ghandhi once said, “A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the souls of its people.” Greeks living in the United States maintain their culture by accumulating in communities such as Astoria, New York, where Greek businesses flourish and the Greek language is dominant. One can see the cultural aspects of Astoria through the costumes and dress which people wear at church festivals and parades, the different associations and clubs, the popular games and sports, as well as the hit music and media. It is impossible to walk down the streets of Astoria without seeing the Greek words or hearing the Greek language that prove Greek culture is everywhere. Generations and generations of Greek Americans continue to maintain this culture in their communities, and Greek pride has never been stronger.
