In my FemTechNet course Imagining Gender: Exploring Narratives of Technology (fall 2013) students built a digital companion to Margaret Atwood’s novel Year of the Flood. My instructional technology fellow, Emily Sherwood, was an invaluable pedagogical collaborator. In lieu of a final paper, students worked in teams to research and document different parts of the novel, and ultimately to create digital objects to show their learning. They worked on mapping the geography and time of the world of the novel, documenting references to the God’s Gardners’ saints, writing music for the hymns presented in the novel, reviewing the novel’s business places, and more. The image above shows a student’s digital rendering of the Scales and Tails club.

This video shows some of their planning process for constructing the project.
