October 12th, 2012 · 1 Comment · Gowanus Canal

Overdue Annotated Bibliography 1

This article discusses “sponge parks” and their potential importance at the Gowanus Canal. The author’s main claim is that the sponge parks are important not only as an pollution solution but an encouragement for wildlife and a beautiful reminder of how we should value nature. The author, Steven Handel, is an ecologist and professor at Rutgers University. His intended audience would most likely be academics, and he slants in favor of sponge parks as that is his thesis. His article is strong in that it contains a lot of information without becoming to taxing to read in one sitting. The article addresses primarily the environmental portion of sustainability. The material is very relevant as we will be researching the canal area issues and possible solutions.
