“Postcard: Brooklyn”

Overdue Annotated Bibliography 2

Kate Pickert, an author for TIME, wrote this piece on development around the Gowanus Canal. Her thesis is that development plans will have to wait because of the declaration by the EPA of the Gowanus Canal as a Superfund site. She elaborates on how some are upset by the delay, while others revel in the temporary preservation of their peace and lower rent rates. Pickert seems to initially slant strongly against the EPA decision, writing at length about the delay in developmental progress. Later in the article the scale seems to tip in the other direction to balance out the article. The article’s strength lies in its exploration of both opinions but lacks somewhat in finer details/ specifics. Pickert’s article focuses on the social area of sustainability, and the material therein will help our project flesh out the social aspects of the goings-on at the Gowanus Canal superfund site.

Looks useful in terms of providing an overview of the social response to the siting. Be sure to use tags to help sort the pieces later (i.e. social sustainability tag).
