The author’s thesis was that the majority of the pollution in the Gowanus Canal originates from 3 dumping sites. The author’s audience is the average New Yorker- it is a news story and not a scientific text. There is no noticeable bias. Buiso states the facts and then cites opinions from both sides. The article is strong in its back-story and lack of bias but could use more factual evidence (such as statistics). It addresses the idea of environmental sustainability. The information is relevant in that it paints a better picture of the root of the canal’s pollution and the scale of the cleanup.
