Video Idea: Food Network, Industrial Era-style

For a video idea, I was thinking maybe we can use the format of  a sort of cooking show, or something like Food Network’s “Diners, Dives, and Drive-Ins.” In particular for chapter 10, since our focus is on the Industrial Era, we can create a Food Network-inspired episode as if we were currently living in the Industrial Era. For example, in “Diners,” the host visits places around the country that have a certain dish or cuisine that is worth being featured for the episode. We can make up a fake restaurant from the Industrial era, and throughout the episode we can tie in the partifular features of Industrial era-foods somehow, i.e. expansion, refrigeration, etc. Yeah, I did a lot of Food Network viewing this weekend–can you tell? Sorry for being kind of vague.

I really like your idea! It would be enjoyable to watch, especially since food shows are so popular these days. Maybe you could have a team of chefs and then a panel of judges (or members of the audience?) that would ask the chefs questions, while they cook a particular dish. You can pick the best questions that would portray the main themes you found in your chapter, or whatever you want to emphasize about your research. That way it’s fun but informative.

I am a big fan of the Food Network so I really like this idea. Appetite City: A Culinary History of New York has a lot of information regarding the development of restaurants in New York City. Apparently only chop shops and boarding houses were around in the early years; restaurants cropped up much later. There are also a bunch a good pictures and photos to use in the video, perhaps as an introduction to certain points in the video. They give a good idea of what the atmosphere was like as well.

  3. I think this sounds great! I could see basing it on one of the competition shows – that way you could have a couple different chefs representing different resaurants/food types from the era – maybe someone from a working class place, someone else from a fancy pants place… that sort of thing?
and this will definitely be fun to watch!

I really like this idea as well. Besides being educational and informative, the other students would be interested in watching it and it would be fun. However, it will be a lot of work; do we have enough time?

This will definitely catch the audience’s attention!! Just remember to include information that relates to your original questions and claims. It sounds pretty complicated to talk about expansion and refrigeration in a cooking show though… hope everything goes well – good luck!!

hey olivia ! i just read this…this is really creative. I hope we can tie in the many ideas we have in our paper. Or just focus on one aspect. I think this would need much further research in terms of getting the historical facts straight with how the restaurant would look, the outfit, and how the food/beverages would be represented.
