Flyers scattered around The College of Staten Island this morning screamed, “Class Cancelled Because Of The Revolution.” Students walked around campus with whistles and makeshift drums. Professors entered classrooms, unsure of how many students would attend their lectures.
Wednesday afternoon, a group of CSI students rallied against planned CUNY tuition hikes. Protestors organized a walkout, attracting the attention of the entire college community. The student protestors cited recent protests on Wall Street as “inspirational”.
New York State legislators passed an ordinance approving a $300 per year increase in tuition for the next five years at SUNY and CUNY institutions.
After the official march across campus, students took to 1A, the administrative building that houses CSI President Tómas Morales’s office, to voice their grievances. Along with other high-ranking officials offices, 1A holds the CSI Macaulay Honors Lounge as well.
After the demonstration dispersed, some of the participants went to join the protest on Wall Street. The administration did not wish to comment.
