Macaulay Students Spend a Rainy Day at the Yankees Game

Braving a colossal downpour and fall winds, Macaulay students gathered at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, September 28 to watch the second of a three-game series versus the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Students sat directly behind the foul zone with a clear view of the outfield.  A home run by Yasmani Grandal in the second inning brought the Pirates into the lead. Nick Gonzales hit a second homerun for the Pirates in the fourth inning. Yankee fans had a chance to get excited, however, in the fifth inning with a home run by Jazz Chisholm, Jr.

Yankees fans celebrate after Jazz Chisholm, Jr.’s home run

It was a tough game for Yankees fans, with two points earned for the Pirates in both the fifth and sixth innings thanks to home runs by Billy Cook and Jared Triolo, as well as runs by Yasmani Grandal and Joshua Palacios, respectively.

The sixth inning offered another chance for the Yankees, and Jon Berti scored off a hit from Giancarlo Stanton. A hit from Juan Soto in the seventh inning allowed Oswaldo Cabrera to score another point for the Yankees, bringing the score to 6-3.

As the end of the game neared, the Yankees had a chance to close the gap. A hit from Jazz Chisholm, Jr. in the eighth inning allowed Joshua Palacios to run home. Nevertheless, the ninth inning proved decisive in the Pirates’ favor, and Joshua Palacios, Nick Yorke, and Yasmani Grandal each scored the final three points of the game, resulting in the Pirates beating the Yankees 9-4.

However, the game was not without controversy. When Yankees player Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning, boos echoed throughout the stadium.

Yankees fans were also shocked by Aaron Judge’s performance, as the all-star player, who was noticeably absent from the lineup for the game against the Pirates the night before, struck out almost every time he went to bat. He was then removed from the lineup for the following game.

However, after clinching the AL East spot for the American League playoffs, the Yankees may be resting their star player for the playoff games.

The three-game series last weekend concluded with a Yankees win on Sunday, with a score of 6-4. Even with the rain and loss to Pittsburgh, it was still an exciting afternoon of baseball for Macaulay students.
