Jackson Heights Cinema was closed for almost three years before the current owner decided to rent and reopen it. Customers are mostly from Jackson Heights/ Corona and are very diverse because the theater shows English, Hindi, Spanish and other international movies. This movie theater is the only one in an eight mile radius.
The owner told us that there was always a chance that they would have to close so all they can do is try to maintain it but if it doesn’t work out here, he has a backup plan at another location.
Do they know about the BID?
When we asked the owner about the BID, he said he had noticed some improvement down the street as they were installing benches and chairs, which make the area look nicer. When we explained that the BID would cause the rent to increase, he told us that the “rent is already high.”
