Notes for 5/4/11

Brainstorming for IDC Website                                                                                 5/4/11

Ideas for the home page

Option: Home page of pictures that will lead to the respective sections

Option: Calendar with pictures inside it for a holiday—maybe instead split it up into seasons

Option: A globe with place of origin of each holiday

Option: A map of where the holidays come from à a map of where the holidays are celebrated in New York City.

Worried about home page looking too busy

Option: See through pop-up as the introduction—not easy to do with WordPress.

Scrolling vs. clicking: which is more practical and which is more appealing?

Other ideas:

We want to make sure that there are multiple methods of navigation—especially backwards without needing to use the “back” button

Option: Possible use of “hash tags” to categorize posts—like on Twitter

Option: Related tags/keywords at the ends of posts.

Have to keep sizes of pictures consistent—sizing, medium, focus, etc.

We want to have the “substantive aspect” mapped out and content completed by next Monday—by the end of next week the latest!!!

You are not limited to one page

Not all of the information on the site will be visible to the public.

Option: Gauge comparing the native land and New York “Americanization;” picking one side to another—might be too subjective, not scientific enough. Can we turn it into a theme?

Commonalities among topics (stuff we should all refer to show consistency)

-“Americanization”

You want to condition the readers to read the site in a certain way—especially in terms of the introduction.

Main Navigational Theme:

Option: expanding thumbnails with interactive, audio/visual annotation for each individual topic using voicethread.com

MLA citation method only—for consistency

Reminder: MHC Eportfolio Expo on 4/13 (nominations due 4/8)

Just a friendly reminder that the super-duper Macaulay Eportfolio Expo is less than two weeks away!  All MHC students are encouraged to submit their Eportfolios for the competition (prizes: iPad 2, two of them – one for each winner), and all types of sites are welcome: scholarly, artistic, personal, study abroad etc..  Nominate yourself or anyone else you think has created a wonderful Eportfolio.  Or even if you don’t want to submit your own site or nominate anyone, still do come to the event to check out what others have done with their Eportfolios.  Check out the event site for full details (and to submit nominations).

As always, I (and your other friendly Baruch ITFs – scroll down to the bottom for ITF contact info./office hours) are available to help you as you continue to work on your Eportfolios 🙂
