Film in NY

I find it odd that although we claim to be in a "Arts in NY" course, we have not yet mentioned film as a form of art, nor have touched upon the subject of film at all. New York is such a central point for filmography, there are countless films created right here in New York. I was in Union Square Park on Wednesday and I experienced firsthand film students working on a project right in the middle of Union Square Park. There were various students form the New York Film Academy attempting to record. Exactly what they were trying to accomplish I'm not sure.

Darfur, is it a lost cause?

Art is a medium used to open people’s eyes.
On a Tuesday night I attended an exhibit called Darfur/Darfur. It was organized in order to promote and spread awareness about the situation in Darfur. It is a travelling exhibition that through digitally projected images aims to open people’s eyes to the catastrophe that is happening in Sudan. It is only one of the steps taken by the organization in NYC, which during the week of G-8 meetings, is planning more protest and rallies.

Everyday Art and the Opportunity to Grow

On a break between classes the other day, I met up with a few friends in Madison Square Park. While walking along observing all of the different people and hearing the mumbled chatter of hundreds of conversations, I saw a golden retriever laying on the ground. As I followed the dog's leash up to the hand of his owner, I noticed that in the man's lap was a large piece of canvas and scattered around him were various painting supplies. I noticed that the painting was a self-portrait which displayed both the painter and his dog just as they appeared at that moment.

Musuem of Natural History

I went to the museum of Natural History today. This is one of my favorite museums in New York City. History is one of my favorite subjects. I love global history and learning about other cultures. The museum of natural history is a place that allows me to learn about so mnay different places. I took a tour around the museum and got to see some cool exhibits. One of the exhibits that I thought was really interesting was the hall of the universe.

Langston Hughes Seminar at Macaualay

I went last night to the Langston Hughes seminar at Macaulay, and I was expecting a seminar on Langston Hughes. However, the performer, Dave M, an actor who has acted in productions of Othello and The Taming of the Shrew, recited various Langston Hughes poems from memory, doing voices of everything from a hep cat to a melancholy old man, and even using props such as a newspaper, a sheet of paper, and a table and chair. He also pantomimed some objects such as cigarettes and shining shoes.
