Going to the Queens museum was like entering a colorfully mini and huge wonderland. When first entering the museum I was surprised to see many small art works. The works looked like models and had many small parts to them. The miniature models of landscapes and buildings were made by children ranging from ages 9 to age 16. This surprised me how creative kids could be.  Also in the museum was this huge structure that looked like giant colored sticks leaning against each other, creating a pyramid or something similar. The structure was bigger than me and it was interesting to see how this structure was in the middle of the same room of the small miniature models. I almost felt like one of those miniature models compared to the larger artwork. [Read more →]

Today, women are breaking many traditional roles. We often hear about independent women, but how often do talk about traditional women? “The Blind Side” Review

[display_podcast]

Maybe it was because of the heartwarming feeling I get around the holidays or the fact that I liked Sandra Bullock’s take on a southern accent, but for some reason this year, I decided to give “The Blind Side” a chance. This movie opened in theatres everywhere on November 20th 2009, and is based on the true story of NFL legend and offensive tackle for the Baltimore Ravens, Michael Oher. Usually not a big fan of sports movies, I found this film to be surprisingly heartwarming, and an eye opener to the everyday miracles and Cinderella stories we often neglect. [Read more →]

Longer Blurb 4- Fashion Night Out

[display_podcast]

You would think that a typical Thursday night on Fifth Avenue, Madison Ave, and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills would be quiet. On the contrary, stores were filled with shoppers and visitors from all over the world for Fashion’s Night Out. This premier event is a night where thirteen cities and countries including the likes of Los Angeles, Greece, Italy, Japan and many others open fashion power houses as well as many well know retailers past their normal closing hours. Seven hundred retailers this year participated ranging from Gap and American Eagle Outfitters to established and luxurious brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Jimmy Choo. As I made my rounds on Fifth Avenue, it is clear that this night is not just any ordinary night but is a night where New York socialites as well as visitors dress up in glamorous haute couture and avante garde clothing. What made this night so spectacular and different from past years were the huge promotions, events and the vast amount of samples in an effort to promote New Yorkers to shop more because of the recession in the fashion industry.

Art in Urban Schools

Public education and public schools have been a part of New York City since the early 19th century. At that time, a great deal of the student population came from families of poor, recent immigrants, or was a first generation American, themselves. It was quickly realized that the future of this city, and of American democracy in the broader picture, would eventually rely on those being educated in public schools – those who now were part of the more disadvantaged class. It was at this point that social progressives took interest in the public school system. School design was re-examined, and art in the hallways and “school beautification” projects didn’t come long after – it seems that since 1880, administrators have known that murals and in-school projects would have a positive impact on the student body.
