The Deliberate Deforestation of Brazil

Do the economic benefits that Brazil gains from deforestation of the Amazon rainforest outweigh the ethics that arise from the removal of endangered species and indigenous populations living there?

In this project, we collected data in order to examine the effects of deforestation on biodiversity and the benefits of it on economic growth, specifically in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. We examined our findings in order to determine which of these two effects of deforestation outweigh the other.

Based on our analysis, we believe that in the short run, Brazil will continue to benefit from deforestation, once the effects of climate change and extinct species become irreversible, Brazil will no longer be able to access this tool to boost their economy. Sooner or later, Brazil will have to start preserving the Amazon, its species, and the indigenous populations if they want the Amazon to remain a steady asset for them and the world in the many years to come.
