Fine Lines ft. Spices #artinisolation

Quarantine has forced us to distance ourselves from others. However, it has not made any of us any less diverse than we already are. “Fine Lines ft. Spices” brings a desi twist to the original “Marilyn Diptych” by Andy Warhol.

Our image is based on the “Marilyn Diptych” by Andy Warhol from 1962. In Warhol’s picture, you can see the same woman displayed with different colored backgrounds.

“Marilyn Diptych,” Andy Warhol, 1962.

For our image, we decided to add a twist to the art during our recreation. Instead of having simply one person, we added all four members of our group to the image. On top of that, it only seemed right to represent who we were as a group and it all came down to bringing our pride in being from South Asia* and being desi. Therefore, we decided to wear an accessory or clothing that would exemplify our background. The people in the image can be seen wearing anything from shalwar kameez to a bindi and even colorful hoop earrings. These little tokens of our backgrounds give insight into a deeper connection to our identities. We felt that it was only right to represent our diverse background and help each other rise through a simple image.

The title of our image is “Fine Lines ft. Spice.” One of our group members mentioned that there are “lines dividing us” in the image. Each one of us has a separate box, almost as if we are isolated and distanced from each other. This is exactly how this pandemic has made us feel for the past couple of months. However, the colors are meant to symbolize that despite this pandemic, key factors that identify people such as cultural diversity or ethnicity has not gone away. There is still a need for showcasing the different backgrounds and identities that symbolize people. To add a little spice to our title (literally), our team went with “ft. spices” because the backgrounds reminded us of South Asian spices and the delicious food that is prepared with them!

*Disclaimer: Some of us have different identities, pronouns, ethnicities. This is not a “one for all” label. This is merely one way we all connect!
