Impact of Deer on Ticks and Biodiversity of Flora

Analysis of the consequences of white-tailed deer population growth, on risk of tick-borne diseases and local biodiversity of flora, and review of population management methods.

Over the past couple of years, Staten Island has seen a rapid population growth of deer, white-tailed deer specifically. Using data collected from the “Deer Impact Management Plan” of NYC Parks Department and various peer-reviewed articles, we shall analyze the consequences of the population growth, relative to increased risk of tick-borne diseases and local biodiversity of flora. Finally, we shall review methods of population management and suggest the more productive and efficient procedures.
